Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
This study deals with the answers on how working students manage

their time on studying while working at the same time. How does time management

affect the academic performance of a student. It unlocks the real reasons behind the

stories of the respondents. What pushes the said achievers to come at their current

positions. It includes factors that are needed in order to become an achiever. Also,

how the working students themselves surpassed the problems on the long way run

of their hardships.

In this chapter, the background of this study will be discussed. The

statement of the problems on how working students do their best to balance both

studying and working, and the significance of the study were also included. Existing

theories that are connected to this study were cited and came from respondents that

will contribute to the outcome of the whole research.

You and me, as part of these growing teens under the stage of

adolescence, do not only care for our “house-school” life. It’s either you stay in your

house and do your chores, play or hangout with your friends, or study hard and be a

good model in your school. That’s how most of students leave their life. They never

got to worry about the necessary things unlike the others. Others who immediately

become more mature at their young age because of different reasons. Others who
3

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

are brave enough to make a lot of sacrifices in order to get a good education and

reach their dreams.

According to Merriam-Webster, education is the knowledge, skill, and

understanding that you get from attending a school, college, or university.

Shimahara (2016) stated that education is a discipline concerned with methods of

teaching and learning in schools or school-like environments as opposed to various

non-formal and informal means of socialization.

Being a student is not that easy as what others think. It would never be

easy for those who aim high, those who wanted to prove their selves. As a student,

we have a lot of responsibilities. One of it is taking an active role in learning by

getting high grades from academic performance and extra-curricular activities.

Another is by making choices and taking actions that may lead to

educational goals. Applying gained knowledge to actual life along with the use of

enhanced skills and improved talents in accordance to the behavioral development

the student is also included (“Student and Responsibility Statement,” 2008).

In addition, the work of parents is to give the needs of their children. Give

just what is the best for them. When it comes to the education of the student, they

should be the accountable once as explained by GEM Report (2018). If one or both

fail to do so, these students will be forced to do something. This is the time when the

government enters as they offer jobs for working students that are really beneficial.

Nucum (2018) mentioned that aside from scholarships, some schools offer

financial aids to students by working as a student assistant (SA) in your school’s

4

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

different department and faculty. Some benefits of being an Student Assistant can

include free or discounted tuition fees or school allowances. Another option you can

also consider is the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES) offered by

local government units in the country SPES provides summer job opportunities for

students so it doesn’t have to interfere with your regular classes.

According to Philippine Statistics Authority (2018), working while studying is

an increasing phenomenon here in the Philippines. As we can see, lack of financial

support is the main problem. There are many aspects that are needed to consider in

doing both.

A lot of effort should be exerted. Life balancing and time management are

very essential. The importance of education should never be forgotten to value.

Working students may find it difficult at first but will constantly know how to get along

with it in the process. It would surely drain and stress out everyone but with the

perseverance, passion, and faith, sacrifices would all worth it.

Theoretical Framework

This chapter presents the theoretical framework of this research. Appropriate

theories as well as previous research supporting the study are discussed.

The study was based on the Theory of Academic Performance by Atkinson

According to Atkinson, educators generally agree that a major variable affecting

classroom performance is motivation. However, important as motivational variables

may be in understanding, predicting, and controlling classroom behavior, there is a

paucity of information and theory associated with them. There are many theories of

human motivation but little attempt has been made to extend this theories in a

systematic way to educational situations. Furthermore, the occasional application of

psychological theory to education has not typically eventuated in a theory of

academic motivation nor a unified and coherent body of information. As a result,

there is very little in the way of motivation theory which is clearly of help to the

classroom teacher or to education in general.

This theory is all about motivation and studying, that they are factors that

affect the way on students behavior in class according to Atkinson there’s a different

things that serves an inspiration to be productive student, The researchers can

relate this into the topic because there are many working students that know the true

value of studying to have a better future.

7

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

The research paradigm exemplifies the conceptual framework of the study

that shows the relation of the input, process and output of the topic. This framework

illustrates the steps or directions by which the research will do by explaining the

relationship between specific data identified in the study.

The input consist of behavior of the working students regarding the academic

performance and also include the intellectual behaviors of the individual in solving

social problems and other actions they have done to cope up with problems they

have experience.

The process on the other hand shows the plan of action of the researcher in

order for them to get an answer to their questions. For them to have an in-depth

knowledge about their study through gathering and analyzing data.

The output as a result of the plan of action of how working student excel in

class. Conclusion is to be made to know and define the outcome of this study and

give publication in the research. The line from output connecting to the process

and input represents the feedback. It denotes that whatever will happen to the

response may get, this means that there is a continuous process.

Statement of Problem
8

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

This study aim to determine of how working student excel in class.

Specially, it sought answers to the following questions:

1. How do working students manage their time in studying while working?

2. What are the different ways done by the students to be able to excel in

class?
3. What were the struggles of the respondents were able to surpass?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

For clarity of focus, this research undertaking was guided by the

following scope and delimitations. This study focus on the lived experience of how

working students excel in class.

This study covers the life of the student in a class as well as in their work. It

also includes the ways on how they balance their time to study while working. This

research study will involve the student experience in studying and working.

Meanwhile, this study does not cover their personal life that which is not

included in our study. And since it’s a qualitative research we will not include

numerical statistics in proving. This research will not involve the family and teachers

as well as the boss of the working students. This will not tackle any process of their

work and we will just focus on their experience.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study is found to be beneficial to the following:

9

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

To the Students. They will be inspired of how working students succeed in

life. Pursuing them specially those student who don’t need to work because they

have someone to support them especially in financial problems, to study harder. It

will also help them how to manage their time in the way that they are being

productive; it will give some tips to overcome challenges and hindrances of a

working student.

To the Teacher. The results of this study will guide the teachers how to know

the capacity of a students. Understanding considering working students if there

would be a time that they are absent/sleepy in such classes.

To the DepEd. The outcome will help DepEd to have the idea of making

program/incentives/opportunities for working student in a school that will much more

help/motivate them to excel more in class.

To the Parents. This research will be an instrument for the families of the

working students out there to have good connections with their daughter/son. Being

a working student is not a joke, they need someone to talk to, in where they can

share their problem and also good happening about their life.

To the School. This study will help the school to have a good

background/name, through the working students excelling in class and even

participating into some literature contest representing the name of the school.

To the Future Researcher. This research will benefit them to have a similar

topic or research regarding to the working students on how they use their time on a

more productive way.

Chapter 2

A Review of Related Literature and Studies

11

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

This chapter gives the Related Literature that supports the study of the

researchers. This provides sufficient information that serves as evidences. The

researchers conduct this study to determine the effects of how working students

excel in their class. At the end of this chapter, synthesis of related literature and

studies stated the summary of what others have researched so that they may help in

the improvement of the present study.

In this chapter, the research described the face of the main problem, its

current situation and its variables through related literature and studies. Sourced

mainly in books, journals the internet, and other studies. This review includes: (1)

Academic Performance of Working Students; (2) The Impact of Work to the Students

Academic Performance; (3) How Student excel despite of Working.

Academic Performance of Working Students

Sharrock (2018) stated that academic performance describes how well you

perform in school courses like social studies, history, english, sciences, and math,

but can also include the “specials” or elective courses in the Arts, music, health,

business, and others. Academics are courses that are graded and retained for

school records. It refers to what the student have learned or what skills the student

has learned and is usually measured through assessments like standardized tests,

performance assessments and portfolio assessments (Santrock, 2006).

According to IGI Global, academic performance is defined by students’

reporting of past semester CGPA/GPA and their expected GPA for the current

semester. The grade point average or GPA is now used by most of the tertiary
12

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

institutions as a convenient summary measure of the academic performance of their

students. The GPA is a better measurement because it provides a greater insight

into the relative level of performance of individuals and different group of students.

Educators generally agree that a major variable affecting the academic

performance is motivation. However, important as a motivational variables maybe in

understanding, predicting and controlling classroom performance, there is paucity of

information and theory associated with them (Atkinson, 1996).

Hoppe (1930) invited an assortment of local trade’s people and university

students to practice tossing rings on the moving pegs at various distances from the

target. He found that some subjects felt satisfied after placing, say, eight rings, while

others expressed extreme frustration at only twelve correct tosses. Additionally,

Hoppe found that the performance level needed to arouse feelings of success

changed over time for each individual. A score that was initially judged a success

might well be considered unacceptable on a later practice trial.

As cited by the "Principles of Learning", Covington (1998) noted several

factors of motivation derivable from Hoppe’s findings

Levels of Aspiration – Judgments of success or failure depend less on actual

levels of performance, and more on the relationship between the individual’s

performances and aspirations. Feelings of success come when goals are achieved.

Feelings of failure come when they are not.

Self-Confidence – “Self-confidence reflects the extent to which individuals

believe themselves able enough mentally to win the prize, strong enough to turn
13

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

back the foe or possessing sufficient hand-eye coordination to toss enough rings

correctly”

Expectancy – “The term expectancy generally refers to perceived estimates

of eventual success—how sure individuals are of doing well in the end, but not

necessarily that they themselves are the cause of their success”

Realistic Challenges – “The key to sustained involvement in learning requires

that a realistic match be established between the individual’s present capabilities

and the demands of the achievement task”

Self-Generated Goals – Hoppe’s subjects set their own achievement goals,

and altered them as necessary. The result was that “their aspirations spiraled

upward just ahead of current achievement levels, but not so far ahead that their

temporary goals could not be reached and surpassed through persistent effort and

practice”. In this manner, Hoppe’s subjects were constantly performing at their

current maximum. Control of One’s Own Progress – The feeling of control of one’s

own progress that came by way of setting one’s own goals generated a positive

dynamic that sustained involvement in the task.

The Impact of Work to the Students Academic Performance

As stated by Pascarella and Padgett (in Lederman 2009), sought to examine

the impact of work on pure academic performance and looked at how students who

put varying hours into on- and off-campus worked fared on measures such as critical
14

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

thinking, moral reasoning, socially responsible leadership, and Psychological well-

being. Results revealed that working more than 20 hours had a positive effect on

students’ psychological well-being, and students who worked off campus also

trended positively on leadership skills. Work did not have much a negative effect on

cognitive-type outcomes like moral reasoning and critical thinking, but work has a

positive effect on things like psychological well-being and leadership even when one

is working a ton of hours. Findings further showed that there were significant

differences in the impact on students who came into college with varying academic

abilities, with much more harm done to students who scored lower on college

entrance exams. Working on campus between 1-10 hours a week had a positive

effect on critical thinking for high-ability students but a strong negative effect for low-

ability students.

In this regards Atkinson (1996) said that educators generally agree that a

major variable affecting classroom performance is motivation. However, important as

motivational variables may be in understanding, predicting, and controlling

classroom behavior, there is a paucity of information and theory associated with

them. There are many theories of human motivation ;but little attempt has been

made to extend this theories in a systematic way to educational situations.

Furthermore, the occasional application of psychological theory to education has not

typically eventuated in a theory of neither academic motivation nor a unified and

coherent body of information. As a result, there is very little in the way of motivation

theory which is clearly of help to the classroom teacher or to education in general.

15

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Pike in Aldermen (2009) found that various amounts of on and off-campus

work directly influenced students’ self-reported grades and indirectly affected their

levels of engagement in academic activities. Working more than 20 hours a week

has a negative impact on students’ grades, whether the employment is on campus

or off. Students who work 20 hours or less, on campus and off, report roughly

similar grades as do students who do not work at all. The indirect relationships

between employment and grades, as indicated by students’ levels of engagement in

“educationally purposeful activities,” are more complicated. Students who work 20

hours or less a week on campus report higher levels on all five levels of engagement

used. Working 20 hours or less off campus strengthens students’ performance on

two of the five engagement levels, while students who work 20 hours or more, on

campus or off, “did tend to be more engaged than students who did not work at all.

When combining the direct and indirect impact on grades, though, working more

than 20 hours a week on campus or off negatively affects students’ academic

performance, as the significant time those students spend working ultimately drags

down their grades. But for students who worked less than 20 hours a week, where

they worked was an important differentiator, with those who worked on campus

reporting a net positive gain in grades, while those who worked off campus felt a

significant negative effect. Results implied that creating meaningful work

experiences for students on campus is a key element in an overall strategy designed

to foster Student achievement and success.

16

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

In addition, Singh (1998) mentioned in his study which factored in socio-

economic status and previous achievement, states that the more hours worked the

greater negative effects on students working longer hours could be more severe

than for older students. Many who work part-time have limited participation in extra-

curricular activities (Hope,1990). Many researches indicating that employment have

negatively affected students’ academic achievement stated that an increase in the

amount of hours worked of the most influence factors (Watanabe, 2005).

How the Student Excel Despite of Working

Kavarana (2013) claims that found an increase in the number of full-time

students who are employed can be attributed to a desire to minimize loans and

debts. Students felt the need to limit their borrowing and therefore earn more of the

tuition. Another benefit lies in the feeling of self-achievement and self-satisfaction

that is achieved through challenging oneself with double the workload and two

different life styles. It is all about pushing the boundaries and proving to the world

that one can utilize their time in the best possible way and make the most of it by

working and studying at the same time. It also believed that such an attitude reflects

the abilities of hard work and determination in people, which are qualities that every

firm generally looks for.

Moreover, Nucumm (2018) mentioned that over the years, the concept of

“work-study balance” has been an ongoing struggle for working students. While

there can be a number of factors involved, financial crisis is still the primary reason
17

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

why students take part-time (or full-time) jobs. Running from school to work and

juggling academic requirements and side-hustles while keeping your family, social,

or love life in check is a truly daunting task.

Try to look for work opportunities inside your campus. Aside from

scholarships, some schools offer financial aids to students by working as a student

assistant (SA) in your school’s different departments and faculty. Some benefits of

being an Student Assistant can include free or discounted tuition fees or school

allowances. It also provides you with more time for your academics since you won’t

have to travel between classes or shifts.

It is important to understand that with so many things on your plate, you do

not have the time for everything. Staying true to your goal is the first step in

identifying priorities. Find ways on how you can fit your work schedule to your daily

classes –but never the other way around! Set a flexible work-study calendar by

considering the travel time, exam schedules, extracurricular activities, and other

engagements. Make some allowances in case your boss suddenly requires you to

extend an hour on your shift or you have to rush a due school project.

Working hard can get you where you want to be, but working smart will take

you further. Find ways to accomplish a certain task on time so that you won’t have

to spend extra hours finishing one. While it may seem impressive to do a lot of

things all at the same time, the reality is that multitasking has a bad counter effect

on your productivity.
18

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

A research from Stanford University (2010) reveals that multi-takers are found

to be less productive than people who prefer to do one thing at a single time. This

is because multitasking prevents you from organizing your thought, and filtering

unnecessary information. Using the prioritizing techniques provided above, you

can manage your daily work-study activities efficiently.

As you face the burdens of working while studying, it is important to

communicate your situation to your professors, employers, and parents. Doing so

will not only help you plot your schedule properly but also it can help other people

know what you’re up to and help them manage their own expectations from you.

When everything feels quite overwhelming, just remember that you are not alone.

You can always find support and encouragement from your loved ones, mentors,

and friends who are all rooting for you to succeed.

Synthesis

In this chapter, the researchers discuss related literature that will support our

study. The researchers reviewed, Academic Performance of Working Students, The

Impact of Work to the Academic Performance, and Qualities of a Successful Working

Student.
19

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

According to Atkinson (1996) educators generally agree that a major variable

affecting classroom performance is motivation. And it is been seconded by Hoppe

(n.d.) in his several factors of motivation.

The as fore-cited literature and studies were deemed important to the current

study as much as they give deeper insights on the issues being tackled. With the

study mentioned above, insufficient financial support one of the main cause of

increase in employment rate within the country.

Working will have a big impact on a student academic performances in both

positive and negative, and the amount of hours worked is the most influenced factor.

Singh (1996) stated that the more hours of work is the greater negative effect on the

student but still we’ll get positive effect in improving psychological well-being of a

person said by Pascarell and Padget (2009)

Nacum (2018) in her study revealed that despite of the financial crisis is the

primary reason why students take part-time jobs and the big impacts of working to

the academic performance of a student, some students were still able to achieve

goals and become successful.

Chapter 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the method of research used, the participants of the

study, the instruments utilized in the investigation, the data gathering procedures

adapted, and the ethical consideration that were utilized in the study.
20

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Research Design

Qualitative research is a type of social science research that collects and

works with non-numerical data and that seeks to interpret meaning from these data

that help us understand social life through the study of targeted populations or

places. People often frame it in opposition to quantitative research, which uses

numerical data to identify large-scale trends and employs statistical operations to

determine causal and correlative relationships between variables (Crossman, 2019).

Methods of qualitative research include observation and immersion,

interviews, open-ended surveys, focus groups, content analysis of visual and textual

materials, and oral history.

Minchiello et. al(1990, p.5) as cited by McLeod(2017) stated that data are

collected through participant observation and interviews. These are analyzed by

themes from description and reported in the language of informant.

Phenomenological research is a method with strong philosophical origins,

which can sometimes be challenging for novice investigators. However, developing

an appreciation of these philosophical origins can enhance and strengthen the

research design. A fundamental challenge is to understand the range of

philosophical and empirical approaches to situate one’s own research. Such

phenomenological approaches are often characterized and differentiated by the

degree to which it is accepted that an investigator can achieve objective descriptions

of, or interpret, lived experience ( Wilson, 2014).

21

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Patton(1990) stated that a phenomenological study is one that focused on

descriptions of what people experience and how it is that they experience what they

experience. One can employ a general phenomenological perspective to elucidate

the importance of using methods that capture people's experience of the world

without conducting a phenomenological study that focuses on the essence of shared

experience.

Researchers search for essentials, invariant structure (or essence) or the

central underlying meaning of the experience and emphasize the intentionally of

consciousness where experiences contain both the outward appearance and inward

consciousness based on memory, image and meaning (Creswell,1998).

Rossman and Rallis(1998) stated that phenomenology is a tradition in

German philosophy with a focus on the essence of lived experience. Those engaged

in phenomenological research focus in-depth on the meaning of a particular aspect

of experience, assuming that through dialogue and reflection the quintessential

meaning of the experience will be reviewed.

All the information needed by a qualitative phenomenological research are

based through observations on different behaviors, and life experiences of a

qualified individual or a certain group of respondents.

Population and Sampling

In order to gather data, the researchers chose respondents in the research

population. Research population is also known as well-defined collection of

individuals or objects known to have similar characteristics (Explorable.com, 2009).

22

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

The researchers did the study using a purposive sampling method. A

purposive sample is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of the study. Purposive sampling is also known as judgemental,

selective, or subjective sampling (Crossman, 2018). In which the respondents are

the working student who excel in class.

Respondents of the study

The researchers interview 10 working students who excel in class in selected

schools in Santa Rosa, Laguna. The respondents came from different Grades,

Strands or Courses. In picking our respondents, the researchers will use Purposive

Sampling. A purposive sample is a non-probability sample that is selected based on

characteristics of a population and the objective of the study (Crossman,2018).

Data Gathering

After the instrument was validated, the researchers secured a written permit

to the administrators of the selected schools in Sta Rosa, Laguna. After the given

permission, the researchers explained the purpose of the study to the selected

respondents and then they made sure each participant corresponds to their

predefined criteria. The researchers collected data by means of survey

questionnaire that comprises their age, gender, and year level and student status

and it consist 5 how questions and 5 why questions. The problems encountered by

the respondents will be identified through the second part of the survey

questionnaire that was given to them. After, the respondents have taken the tests;

the papers were checked, tallied, interpreted and analyzed.

23

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Instrumentation

The researchers use semi-structured interview guide. Semi-structure

interviews, according Cousin, (2009) allows the researchers to develop in-depth

accounts of experiences and perceptions with individual. Semi-structured

questionnaire are a set of questions that are open-ended. An open-ended question

requires respondents to formulate a response in their own words and to express it

verbally or in writing (Zull,2016). Also, the researchers use preliminary survey to

know who is suited as participants of this study.

Validation of Research Instrument

The researchers create their own interview questionnaire and not

standardized, so it is been checked and corrected by some teachers in Labas Senior

High School as a part of its validation process. They gave emendation and

suggestion to the researcher in order to classify and improve the said instrument.

Ethical Consideration

Ethical standards are important, the researchers need to respect dignity of

research participants and should be prioritized. The privacy of research participants

has to be ensured. The researchers must be avoided any deception or exaggeration

about the aims objectives and also the any type of misleading information in a

biased way of representation of primary data findings.

Furthermore, Ethics are the norms or standards for conduct that distinguish

between right and wrong mentioned by (“Center for Innovation in Research and

Teaching”, n.d)
24

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Treatment of Qualitative Data

In qualitative research coding is “how you define what the data you are

analyzing are about” (Gibbs, 2007). Coding is a process of identifying a passage in

the text or other data items (photograph, image), searching and identifying concepts

and finding relations between them. Therefore, coding is not just labeling; it is linking

from the data to the idea and back to other data..

The codes which are applied enable you to organized data so you can

examine and analyze them in a structured way, e.g. by examining relationships

between codes.

Chapter 4

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA

This chapter presents the data gathered and the thematic results of

existential-phenomenological interviews together with the doodling of the student

participants.

Table 1
Table 1 represents the coded responses on how do working students manage

their time in studying while working at the same time. Three questions from our

research instrument were included in this table: “What are the things you’ve done to

excel in class,” “How do you maintain your rank in class,” and “How do you manage

your time in studying while working?”

Most of the answers from the respondents were all referring to time

management. It is a big factor that can affect your academic performance along with

prioritizing important tasks and being responsible in doing things you’ve needed to

finish.

In order for you to balance your time properly, one must be determined to do

what he think is right. He needs to be motivated for him to accomplished what is

needed to be done. Mc Clelland(1961) identified three motivators, from what he

believed, that pushes us to aim high: a need for achievement, affiliation, and a need

for power. People varies what dominant motivators they have.

meaningful and productive. Time management is the main issue to this situation

because as what the participants said being a working student is satisfying and

overwhelming but aside from that they also encounter some problems like being late

in class, sleep deprivation and even though they already working. They also face

financial problem but at the end of the day they still excel in class and they also

perform their job well.

EMERGING THEMES

Perception

Everyone has different perceptions about being a working student. They see it based

on how they understand. Some may find it difficult, some may see it as easy as

eating nuts, some may find it very challenging.

As cited by Bem (2008) , “individuals come to know their own

attitudes, emotions, and other internal states partially by inferring them from

observations of their own overt behavior and/or the circumstances in which this

behaviors occurs. Thus, to the extent that internal cues are weak, ambiguous, or

uninterpretable , the individual is functionally in the same position as an outside

observer, an observer who must necessarily rely upon those same external cues to

infer the individual’s inner states.”

Self-Awareness
42

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

Knowing that the respondents were still young, it’s good to hear that all of

them are aware on how life works. They’re already have plans for the future. Seeing

them sacrifice their wants just to do more important things makes us motivated.

Chapter 5

Summary of Findings, Conclusions, and Recommendations

In this chapter the researchers present the summary of the findings,

conclusions, and recommendations that is based on the gathered information and

based on the answer of the respondents of this research. This chapter aims to show
43

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

the conclusion of the study and based on the research title, “An Exploration on how

Working Students Excel in Class: A Qualitative Phenomenological Study”.

Summary of Findings

Based on the data gathered, the following findings are derived:

1. The researchers found out that Working Students from Labas Senior High
school there are many factors that affect their life as a working student and one of

the major ways they do to excel in class is time management and prioritizing task

from the hardest to easiest. Since people only got 24 hours a day, working student

tend to be productive in everything that they are doing.Motivation also plays a big

role in their life because it serve as an inspiration to do their task and

responsibilities as a working student.

2. Despite of the struggles facing by working students they can still excel in

class because of their different motivation and some of them wants to gain

experience of working and to be independent also. The two basic factors that affect

their performance in classroom are motivation and encouragement that makes

them

to be great in school and also in their job.

3. There are so many struggle that the respondent were able to surpass. They
need to be productive every single day to make their task done. For the respondent

time management is a must. Being a working student is very hard that’s why
44

LABAS SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1

sometimes they experience health issue but because of their family and dreams they

need to be brave.

This respondent of the research prove that you should manage your time wisely

and do you your responsibilities in that situation. You should not let your problems

affect all your responsibilities at school and work so it’s all about learning how to

manage task and time so that you can avoid having problems and struggles. And you

also need to take care of yourself so that you can do your task very well.

Conclusions

Based on the data gathered by the researchers in Labas Senior High School

students conclude that:

1. The respondents manage their time well.

2. The respondent's motivation and encouragement are factors that help the

students to excel in class.

3. Most of the respondents have a health issue and time management issue.

Recommendations

Based on the researcher’s finding

1. Teachers may understand the situation of the working students

to avoid having a misunderstanding between them.

2. The students may work hard and do well in their task by means

of managing their time wisely and doing their responsibilities as a working student

3. Parents may support his/her child on doing their responsibilities

so that they will be motivated and do their task very well.
