Tutorial 2
1. A 1 000-kg car is pulling a 300-kg trailer. Together, the car and trailer move forward with an
acceleration of 2.15 m/s2. Ignore any force of air drag on the car and all friction forces on the
trailer. Determine (a) the net force on the car, (b) the net force on the trailer, (c) the force
exerted by the trailer on the car, and (d) the resultant force exerted by the car on the road.

2. A bag of cement weighing 325 N hangs in equilibrium from three wires as suggested in Figure
below. Two of the wires make angles θ1= 60.0° and θ2 = 40.0° with the horizontal. Assuming
the system is in equilibrium, find the tensions T1, T2, and T3 in the wires

3. A block of mass 3.00 kg is pushed up against a wall by a force P that makes an angle of θ =
50.0° with the horizontal as shown in Figure below. The coefficient of static friction between
the block and the wall is 0.250. (a) Determine the possible values for the magnitude of P that
allow the block to remain stationary. (b) Describe what happens if P has a larger value and
what happens if it is smaller. (c) Repeat parts (a) and (b), assuming the force makes an angle
of θ = 13.0° with the horizontal.
4. A skier leaves the ramp of a ski jump with a velocity of v = 10.0 m/s at θ = 15.0° above the
horizontal as shown in Figure below. The slope where she will land is inclined downward at φ
= 50.0°, and air resistance is negligible. Find (a) the distance from the end of the ramp to
where the jumper lands and (b) her velocity components just before the landing. (c) Explain
how you think the results might be affected if air resistance were included.

5. A particle of mass m = 1.18 kg is attached between two identical springs on a frictionless,

horizontal tabletop. Both springs have spring constant k and are initially unstressed, and the
particle is at x = 0. (a) The particle is pulled a distance x along a direction perpendicular to the
initial configuration of the springs as shown in Figure below.

a. Show that the force exerted by the springs on the particle is

b. Show that the potential energy of the system is

c. Make a plot of U(x) versus x and identify all equilibrium points. Assume L = 1.20 m
and k = 40.0 N/m. (d) If the particle is pulled 0.500 m to the right and then released,
what is its speed when it reaches x = 0?

6. As a result of friction, the angular speed of a wheel changes with time according to 𝑑𝑡 =
𝜔0 𝑒 −𝜎𝑡 where 𝜔0 and 𝜎 are constants. The angular speed changes from 3.50 rad/s at t = 0 to
2.00 rad/s at t = 9.30 s. (a) Use this information to determine 𝜎 and 𝜔0 . Then determine (b)
the magnitude of the angular acceleration at t = 3.00 s, (c) the number of revolutions the
wheel makes in the first 2.50 s, and (d) the number of revolutions it makes before coming to
rest.

7. A uniform chain of length 8.00 m initially lies stretched out on a horizontal table. (a) Assuming
the coefficient of static friction between chain and table is 0.600, show that the chain will
begin to slide off the table if at least 3.00 m of it hangs over the edge of the table. (b)
Determine the speed of the chain as its last link leaves the table, given that the coefficient of
kinetic friction between the chain and the table is 0.400.

8. A 4.00-kg particle moves along the x axis. Its position varies with time according to
x = t + 2.0t 3, where x is in meters and t is in seconds. Find (a) the kinetic energy of the particle
at any time t, (b) the acceleration of the particle and the force acting on it at time t, (c) the
power being delivered to the particle at time t, and (d) the work done on the particle in the
interval t = 0 to t = 2.00 s.
