Procedure:

I. DETERMIINATION OF IONIC CONDUCTIVITY IN A BATCH REACTION

1. The software was switched on

2. Inside the reactor, 250 mL of 0.1 M NaOH was placed.
3. The stirrer was immediately turned on as the 250 mL of 0.1 M Ethyl Acetate was added as it set
to 100% agitation rate.
4. After the last drop, the conductivity meter was placed. The initial conductivity was then
recorded.
5. For 30 minutes, the conductivity was recorded every 20 seconds.

II. CALIBRATION OF THE PERISTALTIC PUMPS

1. 1 L of each two reagent bottles were filled up.

2. The tank was filled with 500 mL water.
3. The AB-2 pump was activated and set to 100%.
4. Every 20 mL volume, the time to fill up was simultaneously recorded.
5. The AB-2 pump was then closed.
6. AB-3 pump was then activated and set to 100%.
7. Again, every 20 mL volume, the time to fill up was simultaneously recorded.
8. Until the flowrate of AB-3 was equal or almost same as AB-2, the AB-3 pump was set to other
rate (about 70% - 80%)
9. This set-up was used for the next part of the procedure.

III. DETERMINATION OF IONIC CONDUCTIVITY IN A CONTINUOUS REACTION

1. 6 L of reagents at the back of the set-up was placed with thee tubes was being placed in their
respective places.
2. 50 mL of water was added into the tank and used this to prime the pumps. The valves were
made sure to be opened.
3. The pumps with previous set-up from the previous experiment was activated if the bubbles
were completely purged out.
4. The conductivity meter was placed and recorded the conductivity from the first reading and
every after 5 seconds.
5. An empty discharge 15 L bottle was placed at the end of the overflow tube.
6. The conductivity was recorded for 1 hour and a half hour.
7. The recorded conductivity vs time was recorded.
