TFRI 10:30-12:00 February 25, 2019

No man is an island. We cannot survive alone, we’ll go insane and eventually die without
other people around us. There is a need for us to interact with people, that is where communication
enters. In order for us to associate with people we have to communicate, be it verbal or nonverbal.
It would be very impossible for us to get along and understand people without communication.
Everything starts with a message, and through communication we deliver that message and we get
the right response, same as how we receive the information and we give the right response or
feedback. It is highly important to understand the significance of communication, as we always
apply it to everything we do, regardless of our social status, and profession. The 90% part of our
everyday life is spent by doing and exercising communication. We should not only be reminded
with its significance but we also have to be mindful with how we do the process of communication,
we have to do it right and proper, with ethics and values applied to it.

We are provided with the different models of communication in order for us to have a better
understanding on the different process of communication, and would serve as a guide for us on
how we should exercise our communication skills. Most of us are very familiar with the very
common and basic linear model, a one-way model to communicate with others consisting the
sender encoding the message and channeling it to the receiver in the process of noise. It assumes
that there is a clear cut beginning and end to communication. We have the mother of all models,
Shanon and Weaver’s model of communication is more technological than linear models. We have
Schramm and Osgood model of communication, which they describe as a two-way street, with a
sender and a receiver. Communication is circular, and according to them the capacity to convey
and achieve the right response is based on the field of experience of the sender and the receiver.
The “ABX” model of communication proposed by Newcomb is another type of communication
model which gives emphasis on the role of communication in social relationships, in maintaining
social equilibrium within the society. Next is the dance helical model of Frank Dance. The name
comes from the word ‘helix’. It shows how communication is dynamic and non-linear process. It
emphasizes the difficulties of communication. According to Frank the whole communication
process takes some time to reach, it develops gradually into next levels. He induced the concept of
time. Last but not the least, the Devito’s interactive model or the “convergence model”. It is the
exchange of ideas and messages taking place both ways from sender to receiver and vice versa.
The message formation is also affected by the field of experience similar to newcomb’s model of
communication.

Communication is a process which means that there are steps taken and set into a particular
order to achieve a desired result. There are important elements in the communication process. First
is the sender or the encoder, he gets to decide what message should be sent, it is his job to
conceptualize. Second is the medium, the form which a message takes, in the form of a letter,
email, or face to face in the form of speech. Next we have the channel which is responsible for the
delivery of the chosen message form. The fourth one is the receiver or the decoder which is
responsible for extracting the meaning of the message and providing feedback. His job is to
interpret the message. Fifth is the feedback, it determines the success or the failure of the
communication. The next one is the context, the environment surrounding including the things,
place, time, event, and the attitude of sender and receiver. Lastly, we have the noise. It inhibits the
conveyance of the message. Anything that gets in the way of the message being accurately
received, interpreted, and responded to. It may be external or internal. These are the important
elements of the communication process.

As a student I must say communication is not only a necessity but a tool and an instrument
for each one of us, to students like me who are able to make it this far. Through communication I
am able to express myself, to share my ideas and opinions, it gives me the ability to understand
people and situations. Through communication I met different people with different views and
perspectives in life, I was able to make friends, I developed my skills in interacting and socializing
within bigger crowds. All the learnings I have in me are facilitated by communication. I won’t be
able to make this paper without communication. Without communication I will not get to where I
am heading for. There is no input and output without communication. I think nothing is done
without communication. Rules and instructions are implemented and followed through
communication. The give and take process in a class occurs with communication. Issues and
misunderstandings are settled through communication. As a student I learn through
communication, verbal or non-verbal, listening and digesting the needed knowledge and giving
my output or response. I know I can only be a prosecutor if I finish a degree and pass the bar exam,
but mostly if I have the skills in conducting good communication. Communication is indeed the
key to my aspirations and to my desired profession.

A community without communication is null. A community is a group of people sharing

the same identity, which means people are one and are correlated. The people are ought to be
united, therefore there is a need for understanding, and it is only achieved through good
communication. People should learn to listen to one another and at the same time should be able
to contribute ideas for the betterment of the community. Inevitable problems are to be settled
through good communication. Whatever social status you have in the community, you should be
mindful and considerate to people’s feelings. Your profession or social standing is not an excuse
for you to exercise communication in a self-centered and ill-mannered. Communication is so
significant that sometimes we forget how we should use it to construct ourselves and other people,
sometimes we use it to our own interest and will without being considerate to other. Everyday, as
we try to communicate to we should watch ourselves and asses it, in order for us to improve and
realize that communication is a tool to connect us to people, to establish good relations, to promote
peace and harmony, to manifest that no man is an island. Remember that despite our differences,
despite diversity, through communication we are binded together, we are being united.
