Content Standard Addressed: VAK.RE.1 Discuss personal works of art and the artwork of others to
enhance visual literacy.
b. Discuss works of art using art vocabulary with an emphasis on the elements of art
Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The technology tool used for this lesson included a PowerPoint,
which provided the students with a visual representation of the content. The PowerPoint also
included audio representation as it read along with the words on the screen. These elements support
students in the classroom by providing them with multiple means of representation. The PowerPoint
included words, pictures, colors, and audio recordings. These components help the engagement of
students because they expose them to various learning style preferences. Providing students with
Basic Productivity Tools (BPT)
many ways to learn the content allows them to retain the information better because they are able to
do so in a way they choose.
This lesson will begin with the teacher discussing the elements of colors. The project will be
introduced through a whole class discussion. I will ask the students “what is your favorite color?” and
“is there anything you can think of that is that color?” These questions will allow the students to
extend their thinking and create connections. Once we have discussed this element of art the
students will watch a PowerPoint called “Colors,Colors,Colors Everywhere!” This will help students
connect the word with the color and the pictures that represent that color. Once we have reviewed
the PowerPoint the students will think of real-life items and their colors. The students will then draw
an item that coordinates with the color of the object.
The students learning will be assessed by teacher observation. To provide the students with
feedback I will comment on their work directly. This will be through positive feedback and
encouragement. If a student is struggling, I will guide them towards success by providing them with
extended examples.
Reflective Practice:
The activities created impact student learning because it allows students to connect real-life things
with colors. Students will connect the idea that color is seen every day, in everything. To further
extend the lesson I could have the students go on a scavenger hunt and collect a specific number of
items that coordinated with colors I may have chosen. (ex: find 6 blue items) This activity would allow
students to have access to a physical object and make connections using their sensory skills of visual
and touch.
