INTRODUCTION
Multi-axis machining is a manufacturing process that involves tools that move
in 4 or more directions and are used to manufacture parts out of metal or
other materials.

The number of axes for multi-axis machines varies from 4 to 9.

For example: 5-axis machines are more commonly used in industry in which
the workpiece is translated linearly along the 3 axes i.e X, Y and Z and the
tooling spindle is capable of rotation about an additional 2 axes.
CONSTRUCTION FEATURE
In order to create a tilted hole at a certain angle, the usual method followed is tilting the
table or changing the position of the workpiece in order to satisfy the hole position.

The major disadvantages of changing the position of the workpiece and tilting the table is
reducing the accuracy of the finished components.

In place of this, a multiple axis attachment allows us to tilt the drill bit arrangement upon
the requirements. A simple holed plate is utilized for changing the angle of the drill bit.

In addition to this, a universal bed is used for controlling the position of the workpiece, so
this system is one efficient process and increases the accuracy of the operation.

ELECTRICAL CONTROLS
An ac motor is coupled to the drill bit arrangement, thus the activation of the ac motor
tends to rotate the drill bit for performing the drilling operation.

The drill bit arrangement is then connected to a split plate arrangement which consists of
two plates with number of holes in it arranged in circular manner.
DRIVING CONTROLS
A multi-axis machine is capable of drilling holes from different angles with a single fixture
setup, saving time and increasing productivity.

Tool axis control implies the ability to manipulate the angle of the tool, relative to the cut
pattern. This puts a greater amount of control on our hands. The cut speed, finish quality
and tool life can be controlled with tool axis control.

In order to change the axis, we just need to rotate the dynamic plate over the fixed plate
until the required position is obtained.
APPLICATIONS
1. Used in automobile workshops for drilling carburetor holes.
2. Used in small scale industries.
3. For performing the operations in huge numbers which cannot be done in ordinary
machines since it’s portable.
4. In places where frequent change in operation is required.
5. In small scale industries and automobile maintenance shops, where there are
frequent needs of drilling and boring machines.
INTEGRATED DEBURRING SYSTEMS
There are a number of different types of burr produced during the drilling process. Two
burrs are produced in the drilling of every hole; an entrance and an exit burr.

The entrance burr is produced on the side of the workpiece where the drill enters, this
burr is usually considerably smaller than the exit burr and is usually of little concern as it
may be removed easily by chamfering the hole.

When drilling through a number of layers, interlayer burrs are often formed between the
layers.

Burr height increases with drill diameter. Also, increasing the feed rate increases burr
size.

Chamfering the pre-drilled hole can eliminate both entrance and exit burrs.
INTEGRATED DEBURRING SYSTEMS
Drilling Burr Control Charts (DBCC) can be used to predict what type of burr will be
formed. There are a number of parameters which affect the burr produced during
drilling, these are:

● Drill geometry
● Material properties
● Process conditions
● Tool wear
● Tool material
