Carpet coloring is
accomplished by pre-dyeing
the carpet fibers before the
carpet is manufactured, or
postdyeing the finished
piece of carpet. Most carpet
is postdyed, because this
process allows manufacturers
to respond quickly to the
needs of the market.
Predyeing Methods are
basically Stock, Skein or
Solution Dyeing. The most
common Postdyeing Method is
Piece Dyeing but there are
other methods that are also
used as stated accordingly.

Stock Dyeing refers to

the dyeing of the
fibers, or stock,
before it is spun in
to yarn. It is done by
putting loose fibers
in to large vats
containing the dye
bath, which is then
heated to the
appropriate
temperature required
for the dye
application and dyeing
process. It is usually
suitable for woolen
materials when heather
like color effects are
desired.

Skein Dyeing consists of immersing

large, loosely wound hanks
(skeins) or yarn into dye vats
that are especially designed for
this purpose. Soft, lofty yarns,
such as hand-knitted yarns are
usually skein dyed. It is the most
costly yarn-dye method.

Solution Dyeing
Solution Dyeing is a method
applied for dyeing the synthetic
fibers. Dye is added to the
solution before it is extruded
through the spinnerets for
making synthetic filaments. This
gives a colorfast fiber as the
pigments are used which are the
fastest known colors.

Piece Dyeing
The constructed fabrics are piece dyed for the flexibility they provide. The
textile manufacturer can dye the whole fabric in batches according to the
fashion demands of the time thus avoiding wastage and resultantly loss.
There are several methods for piece dyeing.

Jig Dyeing is an efficient

method of dyeing fabric, the
machine is also known by the
name of "jiggger". It processes
the fabric through the machine
by holding it on rollers in open
width to avoid creasing. the
machine operates by transferring
the fabric back and forth
through dye bath between two
reels.

Winch, Reel or
Beck Dyeing
Winch or beck dyeing machine is
oldest form of piece dyeing
machine.

Open Beck
Dyeing
Produces about 1,000 yards of dyed
carpet. The carpet ends are attached
to form a large loop, which is
submerged in a dye vat.

Jet Beck Dyeing

Achieves a very consistent level of color. Carpet
is sewn together end to end, forming a continuous
loop placed in a large circular tubes called jet
becks. The carpet loop is circulated under a jet
of dye liquor.

A process of
dyeing fabrics by
passing the
fabrics between
rollers that apply
the dyestuff.

Differential or Cross Dyeing

When fibers in a blend are dyed
the same color, the dyeing is
referred to as union dyeing,
whereas dyeing fibers in a blend
of different colors is referred to
as cross dyeing.

Space Dyeing
Process whereby different colours
are "printed" along the length of
the yarn before it is manufactured
into carpet, with different colour
baths for each yarns.

Resist Dyeing
Opposite of differential dyeing.
Yarn is treated to resist
additional dyes. It produces no
discernable pattern and used for
shading only.
M E T H O D S O F C O L O R I N G

Continuous Dyeing
A process of dyeing carpet in a
continuous production line,
rather than piece-dyeing
separate lots, most often done
on Kusters continuous dyeing
equipment which flows on
dyestuff as distinguished from
submerging carpet in separate
dye becks.

Package Dyeing
Spun yarns are wound on large
perforated forms. Under heat or
pressure , dyes are forced
through the perforation and onto
the yarn.

Achieved with a random dye

application or a TAK random
pattern machine, which
disperses regulated amounts
of dye on carpet that is
already dyed a single ground
color or even on undyed
goods. Several TAK dyers can
apply several colors at
intervals to achieve unusual
pattern effects.
