Good morning ,today we are here to present the merchant of

venice by willaim shakespere
Summery-THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

THERE WAS A JEW NAMED SHYLOCK WHO LIVED IN VENICE.

He used to give loan to people with high interests. there was
a merchant named antonio who was a very generous man
and used to give loans without any interests shylock and
antonio were enemies. antonio had a best friend named
basanio.one day basanio went to antonio and asked for 3000
ducats so that he could marry the love of his life,a rich and
noble woman named portia.antonio did not had any money
with him at the moment so they both went to shylock. the
jew very friendly offered 3000 ducats but if he is not able to
return the koney till a certain date the jew would cut a pound
of antonio flesh.antonio agreed to this as some of his ships
were coming with merchandise more than the value if 3000
ducats. basanio took a train to belmont where a portia lived
and he was attened by a gentlemen named gracanio. basanio
asked portia to marry her and she agreed . gracanio wished
that he could marry at the same time as them . portia hand
maiden nerisa said that she loved gracanio and asked for her
permission and potia agreed. when theese lovers were happy
a letter came from antonio saying that his ships drowned and
now he is not going to live as shylock will cuta pound of flesh.
now basanio left with gold three times the value of 3000
ducats but now the duke was judging the case.
Narrator-portia dressed herself in mens apparel to plead for
Antonio
Portia-here sir a letter from bellario….(HANDS OVER THE
PAPER)
Duke- (READS THE PAPER) bellario will not be able to plead
for Antonio as he is sick and has permitted dr. balthasar to
plead in instead…are both Antonio and shylock present here?
Portia- yes,my lord……you have the right by the manetian law
to have the forfeit expressed in the bond.shylock remember
that we all pray for mercy that same prayer teaches us how
to show mery
Shylock-I crave the law, the penalty and forfeit of my bond
Portia- is he not able to pay the money?
Bassanio-(INTEREPTING LOUDLY)yes,here ,3 thousand ducats
as many times over as he desires
Portia-it must not be there is no such power in venice that
can alter this decree
Shylock-a,Daniel has come to judgement o,wise young
judge!How do I honour you how much elder you are than
your looks
Portia- may I please look at the bond??
(SHYLOCK GIVES THE BOND TO PORTIA)
Duke-this bond is forfeited and by this the jew will lawfully
clame a pound of flesh to cut off nearest Antonio’s heart
Portia-be mercyfull shylock take the money and tear the
bond
Shylock-by my sole I swear that there is no power in the
tongue of men to alter me
Portia-why then, Antonio you must prepare your bosom for
the knife…Have you anything to say,Antonio?
Antonio-(TO BASSANIO) give me your hand ,fare you well
grieve not the I am fallen into this misfortune for
you.commend me to your honnerable wife and tell her how I
have loved you
Bassanio-(TO ANTONIO)Antonio,I am married to a wife who
is as dear to me as life itself ,my life itself,my wife and all the
world are not esteemed with me above your life,I would lose
all,I wuld sacrifice all to this devil here to deliver you

Portia-your wife would give you a little thanks if she were

present to hear you make this offer
Shylock-we’ve waisted time I request you to pronounce the
sentence
Duke-(AFTER PORTIA GIVES HIME ANOTHER PAPER)
Tarry a little, there is something else this bond here gives you
no drop of Christian blood,the words expressed are”a pound
of flesh”if in the cutting of the flesh you shed 1 drop of blood
; you land and good will be confiscated to the state of venice
Shylock-oh,wise and upright judge!,jew , Daniel has come to
judgement!
Bassanio-here is the money!!
Portia-the jew shall have nothing but the penalty.shylock,
you can cut off the flesh but mind youshed no blood.nor do
not cut of more or less than just a pound.you are condemned
by the laws of venice to die and all your wealth is forfaited to
the state of venice
Shylock-gimme my money and let me go
Bassanio- I have it ready ,here it is (SHYLOCK WAS TAKING
THE MONEY BUT PORTIA STOPPED HIM AGAIN)
Portia-tarry,jew I have yet another hold upon you.by the laws
of venice,your wealth is forfaited to the state,for having
conspired against the life of one of its citezens,your life is at
the mercy of the duke,therefore down on your knees and ask
her to pardon you
Duke-you may see the difference of our Christian spirit,I
pardon you your life before you ask it half of your wealth
belongs to Antonio and the other half belongs to the state
Antonio- I want to give my share of shylock’s wealth only if
he would sign a deed to give it over to his daughter and her
husband at his death
Narrator-antonio knew that the jew had an only daughter wo
had lately married against his consent to a young Christian
Shylock-I’m sick .let me go home. send the deed after me and
I will sign over
Duke-get thee gone!!
