EMM3103 STATICS

SEMESTER 1 2019/2020

PROJECT: “THE WATER HOUSE”

Introduction:

Learning Outcome: This project is designed to assess the following course learning
outcome: explain basic concept in statics, force systems, equilibrium, analysis of friction in
bodies and structures under static condition (A3, CS).

Program Outcome: The associated Program Outcome is the following:

PO10: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the
engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend
and write effective report and design documentation, make effective presentations,
and give and receive clear instruction.

Instruction:

This is a group project.

In this project, you and your team work as Structural Engineer for the soon to be developed
residential house project called “The Water House”. It is an urban one storey single house
development in Klang Valley area with specific design interest intended to prevent flash flood
that frequently occurs in this area.

The following provides full description of the project instruction.

Design objectives:

1. The house roof system is designed in such a way that it is capable of collecting
rainwater during raining seasons in Klang Valley to be used by the house residents
through its built in internal systems.
2. The house roof exterior is designed to comprise a mix of both modern and traditional
look.
3. The house structure including the roof system is designed in such a way that the
house is sturdy and stable.
Design scopes:

 One storey single house

 Land size: 465 m2
 Location: Klang Valley where flash flood frequency occurs
 Efficient rainwater harvesting roof and built in internal system
 Minimum construction cost
Design instructions: For this project, develop and propose design for the house main
structure that meets the abovementioned design objectives and scopes. Relevant analysis
pertaining to the structure design is to be provided to support your proposal.
Industrial and community relevance: You need to provide evidences that your designs are
relevant to industries and community specific to the project instruction. For this purpose, you
are strongly suggested to:

 Approach a construction company and get consultation for better understanding of

house structure design. Provide evidence.
 Approach local community to get information on the flash flood problem and
subsequently incorporate it into your designs. Provide evidence.
 (or) Any other ways to show evidence on industrial and community relevance.
 Show how your proposal is better than existing design if any.
Log book: In working on the project, please use a log book where team must record
meetings with team members, company, and local community with evidence. Progress
updates must also be recorded from time to time. Evidences of teamwork are to be included.

Deliverables and Deadlines:

Stage 1: Progress

1.1 Sketches of house design including roof system. Due on Monday 9th December 2019 at
11:00 PM (to be uploaded in PutraBlast). Provide project name specific to your team and
names of team members. All team members must upload same submission individually.
Stage 2: Final
