EN10-LT-IVd-2.3: Draw similarities and differences of the featured selections
in relation to the theme.
I. OBJECTIVES
Throughout the lesson, the students are able to do the following with at least 75%
level of proficiency:
a. draw similarities and differences and evaluate the story “The Last Leaf” by O.
Henry as a source of wisdom;
b. value the significance of love, hope, and sacrifice; and
c. present a song, a poem, and a drama depicting its themes with creativity and
teamwork.

D. Presentation
Today, we are going
to discuss the story “The
Last Leaf” by O. Henry.

I will group you into three
according to your seating
arrangement. You are
going to identify the
differences and
similarities of the vine and

Who are the
characters in the story?
The characters in the story are Johnsy, Sue, Mr.
Behrman, and the doctor.
What was Johnsy’s
illness and the cause of
it?
Jonhsy’s illness is pneumonia. There is an
outbreak of pneumonia in the city. Johnsy
catches the illness.
How did she react
toward her illness?
She loses hope to recover and decides to
just wait for her death.
Describe the role of Sue
in the story and the type
of friend she is.
Sue is a good friend and roommate of
Johnsy who takes care of her. She encourages
Johnsy not to give up and fight for her
recovery.
How did Johnsy
relate her illness to the
falling of leaves? She depends her life on it. When the last leaf
of that vine falls, she also wants go.
How did Johnsy
recover from her illness? Johnsy recovers from her illness through the
sacrifice of Mr. Behrman. When she still sees the
last leaf hanging on the vine after a stormy
night, she realizes she should not lose hope.
She is determined to get better. She finds out
that the leaf she sees is not real but the
masterpiece of Mr. Behrman.
If you were old Mr.
Behrman, will you
sacrifice your life to save
another? Why or why Yes, I already lived most of my life and
not? experienced many things. Johnsy is young and
she can still achieve a lot. Besides, I already
accomplished the thing I want the most, my
masterpiece which could save other’s life.

IV. EVALUATION
With the same group that you have, you will present a poem, a song, and a
drama depicting the themes of the story. Each group has different task.
Group 1 will present a poem, group 2 will present a song, and group 3 will
present a drama. You will have five minutes to practice and prepare.
V. ASSIGNMENT
Read the text “Excerpt from Kaffir Boy” on pages 460-462 in your book. Answer
the questions below. Write your answers in your notebook. Each question is
equivalent to five points.
1. What is the boy’s initial attitude toward going to school?
2. What is the boy’s realization at the end of the excerpt?
