STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

At present time, Bacolod City has very few Psychiatric Hospitals serving the entire

province to answer the need of treatment of those people who have mental disorders. Due to the

increasing number of mental cases, these building facilities may not have enough resources for

adequate services and accommodation of these patients.

This study is conducted for the purpose of providing and designing an ideal and more

excellent environment for people with mental illnesses in Bacolod City. A comfortable, suitable,

and effective place to help them recuperate and improve their mental state.

In addition, it would bring a great privilege for health practitioners to utilize their profession

with a feasible and pleasant environment.

To fulfill the purpose of this study, the researcher intends to answer the following

questions:

• Can the proposed project change people’s outlook in psychiatric hospitals?

• Can the proposed design be useful for effective and efficient psychiatric hospital?

1. What are the necessary structures and facilities to be constructed to suit the needs of

the patients?

2. What are the spaces required in the different structures?

3. What are the spaces that should be grouped functionally?

4. What are the spaces that should be isolated from the other spaces?

5. What is the appropriate size of the different structures and spaces?

6. What level of security should be incorporated?

• Aesthetics

1. What are the furnishings and finishes that should be incorporated to bring out positive

behaviors among the patients?

2. What are the colors that should be incorporated in the structures and spaces which will

produce favorable results in terms of patients’ behavior?

3. Would it be appropriate to specify furnishings and amenities according to the level of

security?

• Utilities

1. What are the different utilities needed for the project?

2. Are these utilities efficient enough to serve the different structures?

• Site Selection and Planning

1. Is the site suitable for the Psychiatric Hospital?

2. Is the site accessible to the public and to the patients?

3. Is the site adjacent to a lightly trafficked road?

4. Will the lot area accommodate the Psychiatric Hospital area?

• Feasibility/Viability

1. Will this project be feasible for Bacolod City?
