They're Really Designing They're Own in Bethesda, Maryland

T o s t a r t off this column I would l i k e
to tell you about my club. I f o r m e d a
club inBethesda consisting of t e n m e m -
b e r s which is about the maximum o u r
club can handle. Soon a f t e r forming we
decided to make a big game of our own
s o that m o r e club m e m b e r s could play
a t a time. We wrote Avalon Hill and
asked them if they could supply u s with
a l i s t of r e f e r e n c e books, a supply of
blank counters, and white sheets with
hexagons printed on them. This they
did. A s soon a s we received our m a -
t e r i a l s we plunged into the construction
and finally turned up a war map of
Europe (3'x5') of doubtful quality a s to
the a c c u r a c y and a r t work. Little in-
a c c u r a c i e s like a huge nonexistant
mountain range on both sides of the
Rhine, c e r t a i n islands missing, cities
in the wrong place, and b o r d e r s s o m e
t i m e s a s much a s 200 m i l e s off. We
did however enjoy playing it. After 20
o r s o games we realized that this battle
map just had to go because the a r t work
was t e r r i b l e ( I was one of the a r t i s t s ,
natch).
We o r d e r e d newboards and counters
and enlarged the a r e a of Europe our
game covered. We now included m o r e
of R u s s i a , a l m o s t all of North Africa,
some of the Middle E a s t , a l l of middle
Europe plus Turkey, and some of Scan-
dinavia. The a r t work was n e a r pro-
fessional (none of i t by m e , mind you)
and the a c c u r a c y was close. F o r units
we included a i r f o r c e s , flak units, a r -
mored, infantry and combinations of
both, engineers, navies, t r a i n s , mines

Smith i s 17 y e a r s old and grew up in
Silver Spring, Maryland, a hot-bed of

a Junior a t Bethesda-Chevy Chase High

The m a j o r problem of this game i s the
r u l e s which a r e v e r y confusing, tangled,
even though we have made several a t -
tempts to w r i t e them all down but gave
up a f t e r tendouble space pages and only
a q u a r t e r of the job done.
The game begins i n 1939 and ends
in 1945. T h e r e a r e six major comman-
d e r s , R u s s i a , Germany, F r a n c e , Brit-
ian, Italy, and a l l of the other countries
under one commander. A complete
turn takes about 1 hour but have lasted
f o r m o r e than t h r e e hours. It i's not
uncommon to play a single game six o r
seven weeks.

Sage Sarge Sez: How to Win
Without Really Playing
T o t h e u n s c r u p u l o u s Avalon Hill
f a n s , I o f f e r 12 t i p s on how t o win m o r e
f r e q u e n t l y . T o the s c r u p u l o u s , I offer
m y sympathy. H e r e a r e the t i p s .
1. P i c k a high, c o m f o r t a b l e c h a i r
f o r y o u r s e l f a n d give y o u r opponent t h e
low, u n c o m f o r t a b l e , b a c k l e s s stool.
Your opponent m u s t look up t o you when
engaging i n c o n v e r s a t i o n . Looking u p
m a k e s h i m f e e l slightly i n f e r i o r . You
c a n i n c r e a s e t h i s f e e l i n g by pointing
out h i s b l u n d e r s only * a f t e r h e is too
late t o c o r r e c t them.
2. Smoke heavily. A pipe is e x c e l -
l e n t f o r making g u r g l i n g s o u n d s when
t h e r e i s a slug in the stem. These
s o u n d s should b e e m i t t e d only while
your opponent is t r y i n g t o u n s n a r l your
l a s t m o v e . Don't b e c o m e o v e r l y en-
t h u s i a s t i c when g u r g l i n g o r you will
s u c k t h e s l u g into y o u r mouth. Not
only d o s l u g s of t o b a c c o juice t a s t e bad
but y o u r opponent will p r o b a b l y r e j o i c e
a t y o u r m i s f o r t u n e , a n d you will h a v e
nullified all y o u r e f f o r t s t o c r e a t e ten-
sion. B e f o r e y o u r s n o r M e g e t s t o the
juicy s l u g s t a g e you c a n e x h a l e gently
through the s t e m a n d blow s o o t o n t h e
b o a r d . N a t u r a l l y a foul s m e l l i n g to-
b a c c o is p r e f e r r e d . Rubbing g a r l i c in-
t o t h e bowl b e f o r e s t o k e i n g u p will c a u s e
e v e n t h e m o s t i n d i f f e r e n t opponents t o
r e c o i l e v e r y t i m e you exhale. Blow
s m o k e in y o u r opponents e y e s when h e
is i n r a n g e . When h e i s n ' t , blow s m o k e
on t h e s i d e of the b o a r d he is intently
studying. When you f i n i s h t h e pipe
r o u t i n e b u m a c i g a r e t t e f r o m h i m . If
i t ' s h i s l a s t one t a k e i t a n d mention t o
h i m t h a t h e ' s running low. T a l k about
s m o k i n g a n d how good t h i s p a r t i c u l a r
butt is. T h i s will m a k e h i m want t h e
c i g a r e t t e you a r e s m o k i n g . If h e looks
longingly a t y o u r fag, blow s m o k e i n
h i s e y e s . S o m e t i m e s i t ' s b e t t e r to put
out the c i g a r e t t e a f t e r you've had only
o n e o r two puffs. T h i s e n a b l e s you t o
bum m o r e cigarettes f r o m him in l e s s
t i m e a n d h e will r e s e n t y o u r wasteful-
ness.
3. If y o u ' r e playing i n h i s house
n e v e r f l i c k the a s h e s off y o u r c i g a r e t t e .
L e t t h e m hang. He will b e c o m e a n e r -
vous w r e c k while waiting f o r the a s h t o
fall. L e a n a c r o s s the t a b l e a s though
you w e r e i n t e r e s t e d i n s o m e t h i n g on
h i s s i d e of t h e b o a r d when t h e a s h i s
r i p e . With a n y l u c k a t a l l you should
b e a b l e t o d r o p it into h i s l a p . I have
done t h i s i n m y own h o m e while my

me. I realize that this job will c a r r y
many responsibilities with i t and I will
do my best to complete a l l that i s asked
of me. (Editor's Note: Mr. P e r i c a
visited u s with h i s family l a s t y e a r
while vacationing east.. .and we a r e
quite s u r e that he will do a fine column. )
As soon a s I received your Consumer
Brochure I immediately passed i t
around to my friends. Beside most of
the Club Members, four o r five o t h e r s
who have Avalon Hill games said they
would buy Afrika Korps a s soon a s
possible. One of the things they w e r e
especially impressedwith was the vivid
and exciting introduction you gave for
the beginning of your advertisement.
Bug your Dealer
Now that Afrika Korps i s being pro-
duced, many of you will be interested
in buying it. But if you a r e like m e ,
you run into difficulties when you t r y
to purchase the games a t most s t o r e s .
With the exception of the C h r i s t m a s
season. I have never s e e n a s t o r e that
c a r r i e d more than two o r t h r e e of the
Avalon Hill games regularly. One way
to help remedy this i s to keep asking
for the games a t a p a r t i c u l a r s t o r e . If
you and your friends a s k often enough
they will o r d e r just t o get you out of
their hair.
But why don't most s t o r e s c a r r y

to this i s two-fold. The f i r s t r e a s o n
i s that the Avalon Hill games a r e the
"Cadillacw models of the game world,
and a s in anything e l s e , you have to pay
for quality. This l i m i t s the number of
s a l e s , unfortunately. And yet the very
nature of the games; the t i m e spent tb
insure authenticity and the g r e a t num-
ber of pieces, r e q u i r e s a price higher
than most other games. Theyeare still
lower priced than 'the few comparable
games available.
A H and Chess P l a y e r s the Same?
The second reason is the very nature
of the people the games a r e meant to
appeal to. To r e a l l y enjoy Avalon Hill
games you must be willing to s i t down
for four o r five h o u r s a t a time to work
out the tactical maneuvers needed. Then
you experience that special s u r g e of
power that comes when you know you've
just wiped out your opponent in a big
battle. Because of these requirements
the games tend t o appeal to the m o r e
intellectual person. One thing I've
noticed i s that people who like AH war

a club, h e r e a r e a few suggestions f r o m
the club I helped to form.
1. Alternating meetings a t each

one person f r o m being imposed
on.
2. Establish fairly regular meet-
ings - every two o r three weeks
seems best during school
months.
3. Saturday afternoons s e e m t o be
the best time t o meet. A meet-

nicely between lunch and dinner
hourse.

experiment with most of the Avalon
Hill games. I enjoy playing a l l the dif-

ially like the newer games such a s Bis-
m a r k , Waterloo and Stalingrad. My
favorite is Stalingrad. I'
"My f i r s t introduction to ~ v a l o nHill
games c a m e in 1958 when my parents
gave m e the original Gettysburg game
a s a C h r i s t m a s gift. It was difficult to
find opponents a t f i r s t . L a t e r , a s 1
found m o r e Avalon Hill fans, my collec-
tion of the games increased until I have,
a t present, all. the w a r games except
Chancellorsville. A s I m e t m o r e people
I was s u r p r i s e d a t how many of them
had Avalon Hill games but lacked any-
one to play them with. With this prob-
l e m in mind, s e v e r a l friends and I
f o r m e d a n informal club that m e t dur-
ing the s u m m e r f o r friendly competi-
tion. Since then, membership h a s in-
c r e a s e d t o ten, and with the publication
of a player Directory in the "General",
we hope to i n c r e a s e our membership

Only a complete idiot could pull a stu-
pid stunt like that. I' Ask his advice
about your coming move, then do just
the opposite.
5. Just before poor haggard Got-
rocks throws that bone, call the number
that will be most advantageous to you.
If you can get the number you need 2 o r
3 times in a row i t heightens the illusion
that you have a mysterious control over
the dice. P o o r Gotrocks will be s o
rattled he'll probably continue to throw
your numbers 5 out of 6 times. P r a i s e
him when h e r o l l s what you want; s a y
nothing when h e doesn't.
6 . Never take his word f o r anything.
Make him d e s c r i b e in detail every a t -
tack and soak off a t l e a s t twice. This
i n exasperating to h i m e s ~ e c i a l l ywhen
you pretend you don't understand what
he's trying to explain. If he t r i e s to
make you explain your attacks comply
with his wishes but make a g r e a t show
of forced patience. With skillful a p -
plication this technique will make h i m
feel like s o m e kind of a n idiot. Talk
down to him a t every opportunity. T r y
to get him into a n argument over r u l e
interpretation. Make him dig out proof
that he i s right. Naturally in the heat
of the moment he probably won't be
able to find what he is looking for.When
you have toyed with him enough inform
him in your haughtiest manner that you
think that it's a stupid rule and you still
don't s e e why i t h a s to be like that.
7 . Keep him moving. Always a s k
for an a s h t r a y , pheasant under g l a s s ,
caviar, o r champaign a f t e r he h a s
moved 25% of his force. If he gets it
f o r vou before he finishes his turn he
will probably loose his trend of thought
and boo-boo on the board. Be s u r e to

8. Throw the die into h i s men when
resolving combat. It s c a t t e r s his men
and s h a t t e r s his patience when h e t r i e s
to place everything a s i t was. Bicker
about the replaced s e t up until he gives
in to your wishes. Then r e v e r s e your
position and demand that they be s e t up
a s he had originally planned. Throw
the die to the floor on his side of the
board s o that he has to get down on h i s
hands and knees to retreive it. If he
t r i e s to do the s a m e thing to you kick
the die back to him s o he still h a s to
get down on the floor. Take off your
shoes and be s u r e to wear socks with
holes in them. He will be s u r e to s e e
them when h e ' s on the floor and he'll
probably feel embarrassed.
9. If you have false teeth you can
clack them together, o r suck a i r noisly
through them. Dropping them on the
board just a s h e finishes his move can
j a r the pieces sobadly that he will have
t o make h i s entire move over again.
10. Drum your fingers on .the table
while you whistle a tuneless off key
piece of nonsense during his turn. It
tends to make h i m hasty and c a r e l e s s .
11. Attempt conversation on any
subject that r e q u i r e s numbers for an-
s w e r s when he i s trying to compute
battle odds.
12. When you s e e that you a r e hope-
l e s s l y l o s t shout with g r e a t excitement,
"AHA! I knew you would fall f o r that
trap. Now you a r e lost!" Jump up and
j a r the table s o the pieces go flying.
Look disappointed and say "Darn i t all,
and just when I had you too. Boy a r e
you lucky. I t
You can believe m e when I s a y that
the dirty dozen work. Of course I hav-
en't tried them lately because nobody
wants to play with m e anymore. I won-
d e r why?

I think a r e the best opening moves for
both s i d e s in Tactics 11. If you have a
Tactics I1 s e t , you'll be able to plot
every unit a s it moves into position to
execute "OPERATION CAN CAN". One

Afrika Korps Sea Movement
One of the r u l e s not made altogether
c l e a r in Afrika Korps pertains to move-
ment in and out of F o r t r e s s e s by Sea.
T o move voluntarily from Tobruk to
your Home Base, you t r a n s f e r your
Units f r o m Tobruk to the Home Base
s q u a r e in the s a m e Turn. But you may
not move such Units off the Home Base
s q u a r e until the following Turn. To
t r a n s f e r f r o m land to Tobruk via Sea,
Units must f t r s t be moved to the Home
B a s e square. Then on the next Turn.
they may be placed in Tobruk and
moved inland if desired. O r , if you
p r e f e r , you may simply move Units
completely off the board and keep them
a t "Seat1 a s long a s you wish. T r a n s -
f e r in and out of Bengasi is accomplish-
e d in the s a m e manner although supply
movement in and out of Bengasi is not
allowed.

A: No - a second invasion m u s t be
launched exactly on the 9th week. How-
