Larsen &Toubro Limited Preliminary Line Sizing LTEM / PRO/ DES / 001
L&T Engineering Mumbai
E&C Division. Rev 0
This program calculates pressure drop in a straight pipe for a single phase. Elevation change,
fittings, change in direction, etc. are not considered for pressure drop calculation.
The calculation is preliminary and based on velocity criteria only.
Instructions
1 The cells highlighted with blue font are input cell and with black font are calculated one.
2 Put Mass Flow rate in kg/hr
3 Select Pipe Nominal Diameter in inches from drop-down list
4 Select Pipe Schedule from drop-down list
5 Select Allowable velocity unit (m/sec or ft/sec) from drop-down and put the value in input
Recommended velocities for various services are attached. Click on the link for referring
the same.
6 In case Mill tolerance is required, click on Yes button. Mill Tolerance % excess will flash.
Put the value for mill tolerance in %, if applicable
7 Put the fluid density in kg/m3
8 Put the viscosity in centipoise
9 Select the Pipe Material from drop-down list
10 Click on the "Click for Friction Factor" button. The converged friction factor will be
indicated by green "OK" sign. The unconverged one will be indicated by yellow
"Not Solved" sign
11 Enter the length of pipe in meters
12 Calculated pressure drop in various units can be seen by selecting units drop-down list
13 In case actual velocity exceeds allowable limit, increase the pipe dia and repeat steps 10
to 12
