CHAPTER I

Introduction

I. Background of the Project

Vertical Farming is the practice of producing food on vertically

inclined surfaces. Instead of farming vegetables and other foods on a

single level, such as in a field or a greenhouse, this method produces

foods in vertically stacked layers commonly integrated into other

structures like a skyscraper, shipping container or repurposed

warehouse.

In Barangay Balugo I, it has one (1) hectare land area for farming

which is owned by group of farmers or association wherein they plant

assorted vegetables which is applicable for vertical farming. Through

vertical farming, the small-scale farmers could improve their way of life

and increase their income since vertical farming helps maximizing crop

yield up to 10x greater than the traditional farming and efficient utilization

of land area.

II. Importance of the Study

Vertical farming would be a great help towards small-scale

farmers. In ways like maximizing crop yield, it is environment friendly

since vertical farming promotes the regrowth of trees and lesser

disturbance to the land surface while the inputs used will be plastic

bottles, and used Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pipe, efficiently use of space
by stacking plants like structure, and cost friendly because it saves

money in land preparation which doesn’t need heavy land preparation.

III. Project Objectives

This project aims to:

 Introduce vertical farming towards small-scale farmers;

 Describe vertical farming to the farmers; and

 Plan a vertical farm preferred by the farmers.

IV. Project Limitations

The project will be conducted in Brgy. Balugo I, Albuera, Leyte which will

cater vertical farming only. Other systems of farming such hydroponic system

will not be discussed in this study.
