TECHNICAL REPORT TOPIC PROPOSAL ASSIGNMENT

Please construct a topic proposal in preparation for the technical report project. Follow
the sample shown on the next page, examples shown in class and pages 323-327 in the
textbook.

1. Type the proposal in the form of a memo.


2. Include all of the information asked for in each section of the memo.
3 Single-space the paragraphs in each section and double-space between sections.
4. Approximately 3-4 pages, up to 10 -11 pages with attachments. (excluding
attachments)
5. Use 12-point typeface, Times New Roman font.

Introduction (~ ½ page)
Identify the topic, the reason(s) for selecting it, relevant historical background, the
purpose and the scope of the report. Explain clearly and concisely what the team intends
to accomplish throughout the research project; mention the topics that will be discussed
as well as the limitations of the research. If necessary, include internal citations.

Background (~ ¾ - 1 page)
Discuss the problem or need that has led to the proposal and why the information is
necessary. Research the background of the topic and provide enough information that
will allow the reader to have a basic knowledge of the project. Include internal citations.

Proposed Plan (~ ¾ - 1 page)


Subject to the instructor’s approval of the proposal, discuss the process that will be
followed to complete the project. Suggest a logical division of ideas.
Attachments: Planning Outline (topic, reader, report structure: 1-2 pages)
List of tentative References: min. 1 page (primary and secondary sources)

Feasibility and Relevancy of Project (~ ½ - ¾ page)


Discuss why the topic is feasible. Has the team assessed the project and created a sound
research plan that will provide a challenge? Explain.

Schedule (~ ¾ +page)
Create two charts (one a table) that will display the technical report work schedule.
Include the time period that will be required to work on the report, research and
documentation, topic proposal, progress report, project logs, meeting minutes, interview,
outline, oral presentation, and project file. Attachment: Gantt Chart – 1 x 11” x 17” page

Budget (~ ¼ + page)
Complete this section carefully: in industry an individual can be legally bound to the
projected budget.

Authorization (~ ¼ + page)
Use this closing statement to ask the instructor to give the team permission to proceed
with the proposed plan as discussed. Include e-mail contact information.

Refer to Lannon, Chapter 18, pages 323-327 for an example of a student


research proposal. Use APA format for the internal citations and Reference List.
