Eliminating Affinity Bias

In a job interview setting, interviewers usually carry affinity biases because they unconsciously prefer people who share qualities with them or
someone they like. They want to hire familiar and relatable people. However, affinity biases can be mitigated or minimized during the job
recruitment and hiring process.

One way to mitigate affinity bias in the job hiring process is for company owners to attempt to engage in diverse interviews to add different
perspectives to the hiring discussions. This can be done through a panel interview wherein there are several interviewers who ask different
questions. Also, make sure that men and women interviewers are in the panel to avoid initial affinity bias.

Another way is for the interviewers to write down their initial impressions of each job candidate and then evaluate and assess their own affinity
biases, and then analyze their impressions. Research has shown that minority groups and marginalized sections of the society are at a
disadvantage when hiring is done on the basis of "best fit" to company culture. This results in the same kind of people being hired which could
be a problem if we want to create a truly diverse and inclusive workplace. So, to make sure that affinity bias does not interrupt in the hiring
process, it is important to have a diverse hiring committee and bring diverse views in the recruitment process. Interviewers should collaborate in
checking their biases. They should set concrete criteria for the job and conduct a structured task-based job interviews that are more easily
measurable and standardized. They should create interview templates to ensure that the assessment is done as objectively as possible and that
each candidate is assessed based on the same criteria or yardstick.

Finally, remember that overcoming unconscious biases starts with recognizing that everyone carries biases. Taking time with decisions, and
seeing each candidate as an individual is one step forward in minimizing affinity biases during the recruitment process and creating a truly
diverse and inclusive workforce.
