SUBJECT: Preventive Maintenance for Carbon Deposits

MODELS AFFECTED: All units with Mazda Engines

DESCRIPTION:
Trucks with Mazda 2.0L or 2.2L LPG engines (Aisan or Impco fuel systems), may require cleaning
carbon deposits from the intake valves to prevent valve sticking. The application of “Sea Foam
Spray” (part number 4032507) or “Mazda Zoom Power Engine Cleaner” (US dealer part number
0000 77 A86 or Mazda part number K296 W0 A86) is recommended, as preventive maintenance,
simultaneously with the regular 250 hour scheduled maintenance described in the Service Manual.
The above cleaners are seal, gasket, LPG mixer, O2 sensor and Catalyst safe.

Carbon buildup on the intake valves can be a result of using low quality or dirty LPG fuel and lack of
periodic maintenance at the scheduled intervals on the regulator. Periodic Maintenance for the
regulator includes draining the tar and changing the fuel filters. Failure to follow the Periodic
Maintenance schedule for changing the engine oil and filter could also contribute to the buildup of
carbon deposits.

Symptoms that could indicate carbon buildup include:

- Hard starting
- No start
- Engine misfiring
- Low or no compression

NOTE: Recommended service intervals are based on a normal application in a clean

environment. Applications involving contaminated environments such as high levels of
air borne debris (dust and waste paper); chemical or abrasive compounds; poor ground
conditions; intensive usage at high performance levels; or other abnormal conditions
will require more frequent servicing

CLEANER APPLICATION PROCEDURE:

1. WARNING:
PLEASE USE CAUTION WHEN USING ENGINE CLEANER.
WEAR EYE PROTECTION AND GLOVES WHEN HANDLING.
ENGINE CLEANER IS FLAMMABLE.
2. Obtain an aerosol spray can of “Sea Foam Spray” or “Mazda Zoom Power Engine
Cleaner”. Install the cleaner tube, supplied with the cleaner spray can, to its nozzle.
3. Follow safety instructions printed on the cleaner spray can.
4. Insure cleaner application is outdoors in a well ventilated area.
5. Turn off all accessories.
6. Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature.
7. Disconnect the PCV hose from the PCV port, on the clean air side, upstream of the LPG
mixer (See figures 1 and 2)
8. While the engine is running, insert the cleaner tube into the PCV port in step 3 above.
9. Hold the engine speed between 1300 RPM and 1800 RPM. NOTE: It is important to
increase the engine RPM to insure the cleaner atomizes to achieve even distribution of
the cleaner in the inlet air.
10. Spray cleaner into inlet air.
11. After ½ can of cleaner has been used, approximately 2-3 minutes, stop spray, return engine
to normal idle speed and shut off engine.
12. Remove cleaner tube from the PCV port on the clean air side.
13. Reattach the PCV hose to the PCV port and tighten clamp.
14. Let vehicle sit about 5 minutes then restart in a well ventilated area, as exhaust may be
extreme (thick white smoke) for a short time.
15. Operate the engine under load to remove any remaining carbon.
16. If engine performance does not improve, compression test of all cylinders; if engine
compression is good consult service manual to trouble shoot other causes.
17. REPEAT CLEANER TREATMENT IF THE COMPRESSION IS LOW.
18. If engine operation is normal, perform 250 hour scheduled maintenance described in the
service manual; which includes among other items: replacing the engine oil and filter,
draining tar from the regulator.
19. Following the service manual instructions, inspect the LPG fuel filter; replace the fuel filter if
necessary.

Note: If this procedure does not improve engine compression or if the engine does
not start, contact Resident Service Engineering for assistance.
