DISCUSSION

The misclosure was 2’15” at 4 stations, so we have -34 per stations. We obtained the ratio

1 : 8468 . The ratio was accepted because it exceeded 4000.

We repeat the traverse survey 3 times because we did not get the same bearings on the first and

last readings. This is due to some errors that occur during the work field :

1. While taking reading, sometimes we accidentally moved the tripod by slightly

pushing or pulling the total station that caused error readings because it is not

perpendicular on the picket anymore.

2. Parallax error occurred while taking reading because most of our group members are

wearing spectacles and it affects the readings taken.

3. When rotating the total station from taking readings on the first point to the second

point, we supposed to rotate the total station to the nearest angle within the area, but

we rotated it clockwise all the time and causes error in bearing readings.

There are several precautions and cautions that should not be taken lightly :

1. Never transport the total station while attached to the tripod. Always remove the

instrument and place it in the case when moving from one set-up point to the next.

2. Keep the instrument case closed when in the field to prevent dust and dirt.

3. Never remove a battery from an instrument while the instrument is on.

4. Always run batteries until they go dead.

5. At the end of the exercise, charge all dead batteries. The charging of batteries is your

responsibility. Ask for instructions on how to charge the batteries.

RECOMMENDATION

1. There are a few suggestions to reduce error during this survey. The suggestion are:
- All reading must be read by one person only for all survey point.
- The person who are in charges with setting up equipment must know how to setting up
very well.
- The picket position must be correctly in same line with total station.

2. Other than that, there are a few suggestions to reduce error during calculate the survey data.
There are:
- All data observe must be calculated correctly with correct formula.
- Double check is needed to ensure the data was correct and the traverse was closed.
- All the angle and distance must be correctly calculated.
- The correction of data must be not than 2’ 30’’ for second class traverse with total station
less than 25 stations.

3. The tripod should be set on firm ground so that the value we get will not be effect by
environmental.

4. We should plan clearly the place where we use as station because it is important get a clear
vision without from a station to another station.

5. The total station must be used carefully because the price is expensive.

6. The experiment should be done on a sunny day.

CONCLUSION

Close traverse is a survey that requires the establishment of a series of stations that is linked

together by angles and distances. Hence, we used this method to measure the lengths and

directions of a series of traverse lines which located in main campus, and each traverse station

was marked with a wooden peg. The plan produced by surveying software and relative

horizontal position can be use for establish boundaries, topographic mapping surveys, and

construction layout surveys.

The correction of data that we get is 2’ 15’’. So it is less than 2’ 30’’ and the precision we get

1:8468 .
