CM-UY 2614 Practice Exam #1 19 February 2020

1. Below is the emission spectrum of the blue giant star, 10 Cassiopeiae.

a) Estimate the surface temperature of this star.

b) Notice the sharp dips in the spectrum at wavelengths 656.3, 486.1, 434.0, 410.2 and 397.0
nm. Explain what causes these dips.

2. A “solar-blind” light detector is one that is insensitive to visible light, but will respond to
ultraviolet light. If a solar-blind detector is constructed using the photelectric effect in a metal,
what would be the optimal value for the metal’s work function in units of electron volts (eV)?

3. The 7Li+2 ion consists of one electron and a nucleus consisting of 3 protons and 4 neutrons
(Z=3). The Bohr model can correctly describe the energy levels of this one-electron ion. The
only difference with hydrogen is the mass and charge of the nucleus, 7.016003 amu and +3e,
respectively.
a) Calculate the reduced mass of this system.
b) Calculate the radius of the electron orbit of this ion.
4. Copper sulfate has a molar extinction coefficient of 0.942 M-1cm-1 at a wavelength of 600
nm. If an aqueous copper sulfate solution in a 1-cm pathlength cell exhibits an absorbance of
1.23 at a wavelength of 600 nm, what is the molar concentration of CuSO4 in the solution?

5. When Harold Urey discovered deuterium in 1932, he had to resolve the hydrogen Balmer
series red line at 656.28 nm from the deuterium line shifted to shorter wavelength by 0.016
nm. If he employed a diffraction grating with 4000 lines per cm in fifth order, how many lines
of the grating needed to be illuminated to resolve the two lines?

6. Suppose a particle of mass m in a one-dimensional particle in a box of length a has the

following wave function:

2𝑎
𝜓(𝑥 ) = 0 𝑓𝑜𝑟 0 ≤ 𝑥 ≤
3

345 2𝑎
𝜓(𝑥 ) = 𝐴 𝑠𝑖𝑛 6 𝑓𝑜𝑟 ≤𝑥≤𝑎
3

Below is a plot of this function:

a) Determine an expression for A that normalizes the wave function.

b) Calculate the probability that the particle is found in the interval between x=a/2 and x=3a/4.

5 <=> 8?5
Hint: ∫ 𝑠𝑖𝑛8 𝑏𝑥 𝑑𝑥 = 8 − @?
