INTRODUCTION
One of the requirements to obtain the passing grade in our

subject Animal Science 2 is the Laboratory exercise for
Farrowing, Castration and Iron Injection. In order to apply the
learning and skills we learned from the subject. We are required
to do it actual and perform the proper management practices
during castration and farrowing, the preparatory tools and
disinfectants needed are well sanitized.
We formed as a group; we individually provide our own

narrative report experienced to express our own thoughts,
excitement and learnings during this laboratory exercise. We
conducted this activity at Brgy. Grijalvo, San Fernando
Camarines Sur owned by Mr. Antonio Cadag.
GARGALLO, ANNIZA B.
During the day of Farrowing, we arrived late but still able

to assist the farrowing of sow, there were already five piglets
born. I was assisted the last piglet come out, while holding a
clean cloth to wipe and clean the excess blood and membranes,
then I removed the umbilical cord, 2 inches from the base and
tied by a well sanitized thread then cut it. After that, I cut
the four pairs of their teeth, using a disinfected nail cutter,
and then placed the piglets in an open basin with layer of
cloth. Over all there were 13 piglets successfully born, seven
of them are male, and 6 of them are female. There was placenta
out, which gives signs that farrowing is finished. I encountered

difficulty assisting the new born pig, because it was my first

time to do this kind of activity, I just followed the
instruction from the owner, so that I can avoid casualties.
Atleast now, I experienced to assist, and I already witnessed
how a sow farrowed.
After two weeks, from farrowing we conducted the Castration

period last November 28, 2019 at San Fernando, Camarines Sur. We
make sure that the piglet was in good condition, we first
organized the pen where we are going to put the castrated
piglet. Since it is very hassle doing castration alone, my
classmates the one who will hold the leg of pig, the position of
pig was vertical, as what we observed during the demonstration
in our subject. I first cleaned the part using alcohol, to
prevent infection, then using the sharp blade, well sanitized I
prepare to make a slit, by tracing the testes, after I make a
slit, I cut the spermatic cord, then again I squeeze the testes
to move out. We used mertiolet as wound healer. Castrating
process should be done as quickly as possible to avoid
complications in piglets.
I conducted my Iron Injection during our weekend duty at

Animal Science Farm Project last November 16, 2019, According to
our discussion, 3 days after farrowing Iron Injection should be
done, it is injected to give energy to a day old piglets.
LESSON LEARNED:
Ever since I never seen nor watched how does a pig give
birth. During our lecture I can’t imagine how was it done, until
I performed this activity. I learned the basic things, which is

“sometimes the hardest thing to follow”. But the best lesson I

learned when we conduct this activities is the experienced, to
experienced it actually is different when you are just imagining
during the discussion. It is really amazing applying your
knowledge to the actual laboratory. All the how’s and what’s in
my mind are swept out when I done this activity, the
negativities I owned was gone when I successfully finished all
this activities.

At the day of farrowing, suddenly we arrived at the

location, there are already five piglets born. Then we just
assisted for the rest of the piglets that will come out. After a
minute, there were eight piglets successfully moved out. I
encountered difficulty getting the new born piglet because of
the sow’s position, but I still overcome it. It’s not easy to
become a farrowing assistant, because I need to keep in mind the
security of every new born piglet. After I get the new born pig,
I clean the attached membranes and excess bloods in their body.
We perform the cutting of umbilical cord and cutting the needle
teeth. When cutting umbilical cord, we used sanitized thread for
tying their cord, then disinfected blade. Then, in cutting the
teeth, we used also well sanitized nail cutter, as the owners
told us. This was my first time doing this kind of activity in,
at first I felt nervous but after the successful farrowing, I am
very thankful that I done it without any constraints.

Two weeks after successful farrowing we conducted again the

Castration at the same place. We first ready the castration
tools to be used in castrating, and prepared all the male
piglets. First I’m a holder of a piglet and position it
vertically as we observed during the actual castration process
in our lecture. I cleaned first the area with alcohol then I
pressed the area where the testicles are located then I quickly
slash to move out the organ, after the operation we used
mertiolet as disinfectant.
LESSON LEARNED:
Learning how to be prepared when conducting this kind of

activities was always important. I learned to do this operation
actually, to avoid complications we need to be more cautious and
always calm down when just in case there is something unusual
happened. But the experienced always matters most.

FARROWING
Farrowing assistance was another experienced for me. I was

very afraid I might do it unsuccessfully and cause pain to the
piglets. Though I know already what are the things to do in
farrowing assistant based on our lesson in Animal Science with
Mrs. Luz, being in the real scene caused mental black and fears,
but after seeing my friends on how they do it, I force myself to
try and I was amazed that the piglet went out alive. As I hold
the piglet with rag I removed the membranes covering on it, I

let the piglet rest for a few minutes and I proceed in cutting
on its umbilical cord, and then the needle teeth. It is really
enjoying and fun for it is my first tome to assist a sow during
farrowing and looking forward to do it more.
CASTRATION
We picked the first the male piglet and ready it for

castration. I wipe first the scrotum with cotton and alcohol to
clean it, and to avoid infection. I hold the testicle and cut
its outer cover and squeeze for it to go out and cut.
IRON INJECTION
Some of my classmates holds the piglet, I prepared the Iron

and fill the syringe, then located the injection area of the
piglet I massage it for few seconds and then I injected the iron
and massage again.
LESSON LEARNED:
Never afraid to try, it is fine to make mistake at first at

least you learn. Always face your fears and turn it as your
strength.

Farrowing assistant was another wonderful experience for me.

I was very excited at the same time afraid because I might not
to do it properly. But suddenly when we arrived at the location,
there are already five piglets born. Then we just assisted for
the rest of the piglets that will come out. Minutes later, there
were eight piglets successfully moved out.

I conducted my Iron Injection during our weekend duty at

Animal Science Farm Project last October 26, 2019. Kuya Gerald
the Caretaker was there to observe us on how to do it properly;
we do the Iron Injection twice. At my first try I was so nervous
because of the sound and the movement of the piglet. While doing
the activity my focused is on the piglets that’s why I do it
properly. However , I have learned that one of the most
important kind of farmers are ones that focus on pigs and must
watch over pigs and make sure they are healthy include regular
feeding and making sure all the pigs have access to clean water.

Farrowing is one of the laboratory exercise in animals

science that we need to comply . First of all I would like to
take this opportunity to say thank you maam Luz P. Napoles for
giving us this opportunity to engaging us into this kind of
farrowing. The sows farrowing within the 114 days. We performed
it at Dan Fernando Camarines Sir and the owner is one of our
classmates. At first we did was to prepare the cloth, blade,
cotton and the others. I feel slightly nervous because itsnot
easy to become farrowing as assistant. It was my first time to
do this kinds of activity. The most importance I just followed
the instructions from the owner. As I hold the piglets with rag
I removed the membranes covering on it. I let the piglets rest
for a few minutes and I proceed in cuttings on its umbilical
cord an then the needle teeth. Over all there we’re 13 piglets
successfully born, 7 of them are male, 6 of them are female. I
am very thankful because job well done and successfully for
farrowing.
Castration is part of the activity and comply. After two

weeks from farrowing we conducted to castration period last
November 28, 2019 at the same place in farrowing The piglets
are castrated with in the first 15 days. Castration is the
surgical removal of the testicles from boar piglets. It is
performed to reduce the potentials for odor and taint associated
with male hormones in boar after puberly. We first ready the
blade, alcohol, cotton, and others, and prepared the male
piglets. I wipe first the scrotum with cotton then alcohol to
clean it and to avoid infections. The piglets is very footwork

and stronger. After that I hold the testicle and cut its outer
cover squeeze for it to go out and cut. I’m nervous seriously
because it was my first time to do this kind of activity for
castrations and I don’t have experience, but at the end made it
successfully.
Iron injections it should be done after 3 days of

farrowing. The provide of the iron injections to energy &
healthy of piglets. According to sir Gerald our weekend duties
that i remember, before injecting the piglets we need to
massage it for a few seconds the area of piglets and then I
injected the iron and massage again. I apply the learning to
performed at the San Fernando Camarines Sur and our weekend
duties for another chance and experience how to do this kind
of activity for iron injections.
Lesson learned
One of the most important kinds of farmer are one the focus
on pigs and must watch over pigs and make sure they are healthy
include irregular feeding. But the best lesson I learned when we
conduct this activities is the experienced and enhance the
skills & knowledge. As part of activity was to develop our skill
and how to manage the sow during farrowing lactation to
injections the iron and also the castrations. Then always
remember believe in your self can do all things successful.
