Why Version 5?
● publication of the new ISO 22000:2018 standard on 19 June 2018;
● transition period of 3 years for transition to the new ISO 22000:2018
standard as determined by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF)
latest 29 June 2021;
● enable integrated management system audits for FSSC 22000-Quality;
● improvement of previous Scheme requirements;
● compliance with Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) Benchmarking
Requirements;
● compliance with relevant Accreditation Body requirements.

● Not include promotional statements or claims
● Brand names are not allowed

● Not mention subcontracted or outsourced processes

● Not include reference to products, processes or services related to
non-food/feed
● Not contain exclusions for activities, processes, products or
services having influence on food safety
● Not contain Development and Design as separate activity.

FSSC 22000 V5 Scopes
● Category A – Farming of Animals
– Shall contain the type of animal concerned
● Category E – Catering
– applies when the catering service is delivered to consumers.
– “Production of food for flight catering: including cold dishes, decorated
cakes.” In this case the airline is the caterer. So for the above scope –food
manufacturing (cat C) is applicable, not catering (cat E)
● Category I – Food packaging manufacturing
– The type of materials (i.e. plastics, paper and board, metal, glass)
– “intended for use the food (or feed) industry” in scope

Category C – Food manufacturing
– Avoid listing of all products
– Applied technologies that impact food safety shall be mentioned
– The type of packaging when it has a vital function in food safety
– Where products are intended for specific vulnerable consumer groups
– Storage, warehousing, & distribution, delivery, supply and dispatch
operations – with conditions
– The word “sales” is not allowed
– By products for animal feed can be included by adding “for use in the feed
industry”

● Category D – Animal Feed production
– Apart from the requirements of category C – food manufacturing
– The type of pet food shall be mentioned (e.g. dry, wet, treats)
– The target animal group (e.g. cattle, chicken, dogs, cats, pet birds…)
● Category F1 – Retail and wholesale
– It is Distribution category for Retail/Wholesale, and manufacturing
processes are not included. It does not include Transportation.
– In-shop activities that only serve to give pre-prepared food a final process
step are allowed
– specify which type of activities is conducted (i.e. wholesale or retail)
– Standalone internet sales and home delivery not allowed in scope.

● Category K – Production of (bio) chemicals
– make a reference that these products are to be used in the food/feed
industry.
● Category G – transport and storage services
– type of service provided (e.g. transport, storage, cross docking)
– the type(s) of product handled (e.g. food, packaging materials, animal feed)
– the conditions of the activity (ambient, chilled, frozen) when food and/or
feed is stored.
– for transport activities: means of transport (e.g. road, air, water, railway,
bulk, containers)

Communication
Communication obligations of certified organizations to CB within 3 working days
● any significant changes
● serious events that impact the FSMS or FSQMS, legality and/or the integrity of the
certification
● public food safety events
● changes to organization name, contact address and site details
● changes to organization and management
● changes to the management system, scope of operations and product categories
● any other change that renders the information on the certificate inaccurate

SERIOUS EVENT
Situation or event preventing a planned audit to take place caused by
humans (e.g. war, strike) or by nature (flood, storm) which also
includes situations where an unannounced audit is not possible (e.g.
security reasons).

Audit duration
- Clear separation between basic audit duration – 8 hours
- On site audit time shall match with audit plan – does not include
travel, audit prep/planning
- Where FSSC 22000 audit is undertaken with other food safety
audit a combination the total audit time shall stated in the audit
report (which is audit duration longer than FSSC 22000 alone)
- Where FSSC 22000-Q is apply, audit time for ISO 9001 shall be
calculated

FSSC 22000 V5: Requirements for the certification process
Unannounced audits
● At least one surveillance visit unannounced - mandatory
● All surveillance visits as unannounced - Voluntary
● Recertification audits may also be unannounced voluntarily
● Stage 1 and Stage 2 cannot be unannounced.
● Unannounced audit typically between 8-12 months after the
previous audit
● Where parts of the audit plan cannot be audited, an (announced)
follow-up audit shall be scheduled within 4 weeks

● Minor NCs (6.2.1): correction (+evidence) and corrective
action plan shall be approved within 3 months from last day of audit.
Exceeding this timeframe shall result in a suspension of the certification.
● Major NCs (6.2.2): follow-up audit within 28 days from last day of audit.
When it is cannot be closed in this timeframe, the certificate shall be
suspended

● Critical NCs (6.2.3): new audit duration minimum 1 day.
-resulted immediately suspended for a maximum period of six (6)
months. The certificate shall be withdrawn when the critical NC not
effectively resolved within 6 months.
-in case of initial certification audit the full certification audit shall be
repeated
● Certification decision mandatory after each audit (7.1)
● All required data and documentation in Portal at the latest 28 calendar
days after the certification decision with a maximum of 4 months from
last day of audit (8)

FSSC 22000 V5 – Upgrade audits
● Audits against the FSSC 22000 Scheme requirements V4.1 are only
allowed latest December 31st of 2019.
● All issued FSSC 22000 V4.1 certificates will become invalid after 29
June 2021.
● The Foundation FSSC 22000 will publish the new Scheme FSSC
22000 V5 in May 2019.
● Upgrade audits against FSSC 22000 Scheme requirements V5 shall
be conducted between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2020.
