Introduction

Management is the area where components of different areas of it such as:

planning, organizing, leading and controlling, are bounded together in achieving

organizational goals. Administration is built in order to take in charge with the

decisions on how to exert effective and efficient way of managing. In line with

this, a manager who will be in charge of the management flow must be assessed

through its skills or styles in planning, organizing, leading and controlling.

It is a given notion that majority of the Filipinos are impractical managers

of whatever aspect of life. Who would not even recognize the infamous lines often

mentioned such as: “Bahala na si Batman.”, “Filipino time naman yan eh.”

However, there are people who stood up and refused to live by those inefficient

mindsets or so we thought. Among these people are the managers of any

business establishment in Quezon City. They were designated to the position

for their qualifications. Qualifications that do not only include a high educational

background or attainment, but do also include other important aspects such as:

age, gender, religion, years of experiences, and the type of the establishment

they’re working at. In line with this, leadership style, as one of the keys to a

harmonious relationship between managers and employees, must be considered

in evaluating or assessing a person who manages a business firm, company or

establishment. Managers could be similar as it seems like, but they still differ on

their way of managing based on the kind of leadership style that they possess.

In this study, the researchers will inspect the managers by means of

conducting a survey. With that, the researchers would be able to know and
distinguish the kinds of leadership styles of the managers based on the chosen

different aspects of their life. It is also to assess how managers manage

themselves towards their dominion. Through the process, the researchers would

be able to determine the edges and impracticalities to formulate an ideal

leadership style. However, the researchers should emphasize the arbitrary of the

data which is in Quezon City. Further improvements and research is still

needed.

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework

Figure 1 Research Paradigm

This framework shows the factors such as age, gender, religion,

educational attainment, years of experience and workplace affects the leadership

style of a manager. Also, it determines the type of leadership style that the

manager possess by administering a questionnaire to the store managers in

Quezon City malls.

Statement of the Problem

The present study aims to learn more about the different leadership styles

among the managers in Quezon City malls based on how they perform their duty

towards their work and employees. More specifically, it aims to answer the

following research questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of

a. age

b. gender

c. religion

d. educational attainment

e. degree

f. kind of work place

g. years of working experience

2. Does the manager address his/her subordinates’ suggestions and needs?

3. Does the manager discuss and instruct well the objectives and policies to

his/her subordinates?

4. Does the manager allocate the tasks and resources effectively and

efficiently?

5. Does the manager show concern and care for his/her subordinates works?

Research Method

The nature of this study is quantitative which used numerical analysis to

obtain data. The researchers used an existing instrument to gather the

information that is needed in the study. The questionnaire that was used
contains different statements that helped to assess the leadership style of the

respondents. The design of this research is descriptive survey that sought

to establish associations among the variables.

Setting of the Study

This research study was conducted at six (6) different malls around

Quezon City as we used convenience sampling. The first mall is SM North EDSA

which is located at EDSA Corner North Avenue, Misamis Street, Quezon City,

Metro Manila. Next is TriNoma Mall which is located at North Avenue, Quezon

City, Metro Manila. Then, Vertis Mall which is located at Mindanao Avenue,

Quezon City, Metro Manila. Gateway Mall which is located at Araneta Center

Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila. Ali Mall which is located at General Romulo

Avenue Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila. Lastly, Fisher Mall located at Quezon

Avenue, Quezon City, Metro Manila. These malls are one of the most accessible

and the go-to malls in Quezon City.

Participants of the Study

The participants of the study are the managers of the different stores or

establishment managers in Quezon City malls. But, Quezon City malls are too

many for the researchers to reach due to their limited amount of resources. The

researchers decided to choose a kind of non-random sampling. Convenience

sampling method was used since the researchers personally went directly to the

managers who are available and willing to participate in the study.

Out of twenty-nine (29) malls around Quezon City, the researchers chose

to conduct a survey on the malls that can easily be accessed. The researchers
chose to conduct a survey in SM North Edsa (Block, Main and Annex), TriNoma

Mall, Vertis Mall, Ali Mall, Gateway Mall, and Fisher Mall. One hundred and ten

(110) managers are needed for the study. The researchers distributed each

questionnaire to every manager who is available in those six (6) malls. Below are

the list of the malls along the vicinity of Quezon City, Metro Manila.

Research Instruments

The type of research design that was conducted is a descriptive survey. In

line with this, the researchers used a questionnaire that was derived from a

credible source available in the internet. This guided them in the course of

surveying in the chosen malls around the vicinity of Quezon City, Metro Manila.

The questions were specified pertaining to the four (4) management styles of the

managers. The researchers used the convenience sampling method which

indicates that they personally went to the setting of the study to directly

distribute the questionnaire to the participants.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers have come up with a plan by first rationalizing the best

way to reach the participants to easily acquire information from them. Since, the

thought that the managers could be too busy to participate in any other kind of

survey instrument or process, the researchers decided to use a printed

questionnaire form. It is a research instrument that was derived from a credible

source using the internet, and was approved by the research adviser. The

researchers wrote a letter of permission to each store or establishment manager

of Quezon City malls that was signed by the research adviser, as a way of formally

starting to conduct a survey. As the researchers chose to use convenience

sampling, they personally distributed the questionnaire directly to the managers

of Quezon City malls. The data and information acquired was assessed by the

researchers to come up with the result on what leadership style/s is/are the

most commonly performed by the managers of Quezon City malls.
