Performance and Analyze of a set of Local Area

Networks Interconnected by Switches and Hubs

Aim:
To simulate, observe and analyze the performance of Local Area Networks
connected by Switches and Hubs.

Tools Required:
Netsim V9 and Microsoft Excel.

Theory:
An  Ethernet hub,  active hub,  network hub,  repeater hub,  multiport repeater, or
simply hub is a network hardware device for connecting multiple Ethernet devices
together and making them act as a single network segment. It has multiple input/
output (I/O) ports, in which a signal introduced at the input of any port appears at
the output of every port except the original incoming.

A  network switch  (also called  switching hub,  bridging hub, officially  MAC Bridge)
is  networking hardware  that connects devices on a  computer network  by
using packet switching to receive and forward data to the destination device.

A network switch is a multiport  network bridge  that uses  MAC addresses  to

forward data at the data link layer (layer 2) of the OSI model. Some switches can
a l s o f o r w a rd d a t a a t t h e  n e t w o r k l a y e r  ( l a y e r 3 ) b y a d d i t i o n a l
incorporating routing functionality. Such switches are commonly known as layer-3
switches or multilayer switches.

Inference:

Hence we can infer that the Switch has better performance when compared with
the Hub, for the purpose of communication.
