5,000 Most-USED SHORTHAND FORMS The 5,000 Words of Highest Frequency as Compiled by DR. ERNEST HORN Classified by John Robert Gregg According to the Lessons in the Gregg Shorthand Manual Anniversary Edition THE GREGG PUBLISHING COMPANY NEW YORK CHICAGO BOSTON SAN FRANCISCO LONDON TORONTO Copyright, 1931, by ‘Tre Grece PUBLISHING COMPANY SHORTHAND PLATES WRITTEN BY WINIFRED KENNA RICHMOND Printed in the United States of America FOREWORD The following list of the 5,000 words of highest frequency is taken from “A Basic Writing Vocabulary—Ten Thousand Words Most Commonly Used in Writing,” compiled by Ernest Horn, Ph.D., Professor of Education of the University of lowa, and Director of the University Elementary School. These words were selected from 5,136,816 running words taken from the vocabularies of business correspondence; of personal letters from all parts of the country, including the vocabulary of letters of people of more than average literary ability; of well-known. writers; of letters printed in magazines and metropolitan news- papers; of minutes, resolutions, and committee reports; and of excuses written to teachers by parents. It is interesting to note that in this list of 5,136,816 words the word the occurs 560,601 times ; and 519,583 times; a 359,119 times ; be 147,612 times; and all 91,568 times. One of the principal factors that should be- considered in the teaching of shorthand is the probable future importance of words in the writing done in life outside of school. If the teacher would strive to drill the pupils on the group of high- frequency words in each lesson until these words become auto- matic—and they may be made more interesting by drilling on them in context rather than singly—the pupil will have a writ- ing vocabulary of more than 90 per cent of all that he is likely to be called upon to write. We wish to extend our thanks to Dr. Horn for his permis- sion to arrange this list according to the Gregg Shorthand Manual. THE Grecc PUBLISHING COMPANY. CHAPTER I UNIT 1 2.
