REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

3.1 Korean Culture in the Philippines

Do you still remember Boy’s over Flowers? Or the song Nobody Nobody but

you? It was one of the most popular and memorable Korean Drama and song that was

broadcasted in the Philippines. When it was shown on television, most teens at the time,

were eager to go home to watch the episodes. Since then, various K-drama’s and songs

have been emerging and, presently, Korean dramas are one of the most popular in Asia, if

not around the world. Many children, teens, and even adults have adored Korean dramas

ever since these were first introduced in the Philippines in the 2000s. The Philippines was

very impacted by this culture, to the point that not only students or gen z’s know it but

also millennials people born in the 95’s know this wave. Filipinos have always been

welcoming trends and culture from foreign countries. As such, Korean culture and trends

as seen in Korean dramas have invaded today's Philippine society and are deeply rooted

there.Korean dramas greatly influenced the food, fashion, cosmetics, music, and

entertainment industries, as well as the views and desires of individuals. Most Korean

dramas showcase the exquisiteness of Korean cuisine, influencing its viewers to crave the

experience of Korean food. Korean cuisine have a lot of dishes that can be seen or

showcased in different Korean drama’s examples like kimchi, ramyeon, bibimbap,

samgyeopsal, kimbap, and bulgogi are some of the most popular Korean dishes in the

Philippines. Some Filipinos tend to copy it and sell it here in the Philippines. Online

videos about the difficulty of eating samyang ramyeon or eating super spicy Korean

ramen instantly have also been circulating in social media. Fashion has always been a

big thing to us Filipinos, we Pinoys always stand out. Korean fashion has also affected us
8

greatly, according to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, fashion is a common dressing

method during a given time or among a particular group of people. Mass media places an

important role in the creation of fashion trends, Korean fashion has spread and has gained

popularity among the Filipino masses. Most adolescents in the Philippines mimic the

Korean fashion sense. Boutiques which sell trendy Korean clothing and accessories can

be seen in most of the country's shopping malls. Korean language is mostly heard or

showed in different K-pop songs and drama’s and we Filipinos tend to mimic the words

because of its sound and catchy way of saying it, due to the exposure to Korean dramas,

we can now hear many Filipinos use simple words and phrases, such as an “oppa”

(brother), “unni” (sister), “anyeonghaseyo” (hello), and others. We people love

entertainment and it is our source of happiness sometimes drama, Korean culture has its

own set of entertainment, it can be tv shows, telenovelas or comedy shows. Filipinos

often find more joy and happiness in foreign shows and sometimes their favorite idols or

primetime people gets aired which makes it more interesting to watch because we get to

know our favorites. Shows like Boy’s Over Flowers, Hotel del Luna, I’m Dating my

assistant, Knowing Bro’s, and plenty more that you can name. Different shows showcase

different kinds of uniqueness and creativity to attract viewers.

3.2 How it affected the Students emotionally, physically, and socially

Most of the studies done about the Korean Wave, however, focus on the role of

the Internet as the medium and the hype that is going around this Culture. (Doobo Shim

2006). Hallyu or Korean wave creates a big impact towards Students, especially in their

emotions, most students say that they have roller coaster emotions every time they hear
9

new songs or see pictures of their idols. Sometimes it can also be a way for them to

control their emotions. It also affects them physically in their appearance, students adapts

the way Korean people style themselves from wearing crazy and chunky shoes, to

wearing crazy accessories and copying almost everything they wear. It’s a way for them

to be pleased and feel good with what they are wearing, as if they feel welcomed and feel

as they are expressing themselves for who they are. Lastly it greatly affects the way their

lives socially, with different terms like “annyeong”, “oppa”, different songs from bts to

twice. They can really interact with others using those terms or songs, it greatly helps

them to socialize with other people with the same knowledge in Korean culture. They can

easily vibe and be happy socializing.

3.3Korean Wave on Young Generations

A study “The Effects of Korean Wave on Young Generations” said particular, it is

youth who keenly seek different types of culture using digital media (Metzer and

Flanagin, 2008; cited in Jung, 2010: 2). Behind the success of K-Pop – and in some way,

other Korean popular culture products – there is cyber generation as the pop-consumers.

This group of pop-consumers/fans is technology savvy “digital natives” who have never

known a world without the Internet defined that digital natives are “native speakers” of

the language of computers, video games and the Internet. The other term of digital

natives are “cyber new generation” to refer to this group of digital-friendly young web-

users. It greatly affects young generations because of influences coming from different

influencers, and Korean culture is really booming and trending right now, and what is

trending young people would more likely to stick to that. As what I have observed if
10

there is something trending K-pop or K-drama will always be the topic like they would

always have a spot to be trending. Korean wave creates a very big influence that almost

all young generations go crazy about it.

plenty more, yet Korean accessories are very extra and in the Philippines people would

hate you if you wear some of those accessories.

Question: How does Korean culture affect the way you style yourself?

Korean idols have their uniqueness of wearing different types of clothes, from

hanging belts to oversized outfits, Koreans never go wrong in creating or miss matching

their own clothes, students of CSR manila are amazed and inspired by the way their

idol’s wear their clothes, it allows them to receive inspiration and imitate the way they

style themselves. Almost 75% of students answered that it affects them and some of them

gets inspiration in wearing clothes, the others say that it does not affect them its cause of

their own style and the originality their style is better than the fashion of Koreans. Some

also said that it allows them to identify people that has different cultures in the way they

style themselves.
21

Question: How does Korean wave benefits you socially?

In this 21st century, we people often create different way to socialize, either from

hobbies or cultures, we ever fail to create ways to socialize. Students say that it helps

them learn and understand Korean words and also to adapt them and use it in their

everyday lives, they have gained plenty of friends not only here in the Philippines, but

also people outside the country, it expands and enlightens them in learning Korean. There

are plenty of terms surrounding the Korean culture that can stick onto your head and you

will always say it, like annyeonghaseyo, unnie, and plenty more. The way they sound and

the how the word is constructed is very creative and fun to say. Some also says that it

doesn’t affect them and they don’t use it in socializing, it’s understandable because we

have different styles and opinions. It also boosts their confidence in speaking and

initiating conversation to other people.

Questions: Can you describe How Korean culture affects you emotionally?

When you love someone so much and see them get hurt or experience happiness,

you would feel the same way as what they feel, that is what you call unconditional love.

Students say’s that it’s a boost of happiness when you’re around the culture, it can boost

your mood and sometimes energize you when you’re stressed, a simple glimpse or look

at your idol it can really change your mood. With a culture that interesting you can never

go wrong in liking it whether it is good or not, it can also create a rollercoaster emotions

like when you’re at their concert, at the start it would fun, hyped but as soon as it lasts

you feel sad because sooner they will be gone and there might be a chance that you won’t
22

meet them again. Korean culture is a very big thing to us Filipinos, especially that we get

attached easily.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Based on the findings of the study the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Junior high school students gets attached in Korean culture that it affects them in

their school life.

2. It greatly affects them socially especially in making friends not only from the

Philippines but also around the world

3. It seldomlly affects them on their physical appearance, not everyone is a fan of

their fashion.

4. It affects their emotions depending on the mood of their idol, it creates a

rollercoaster on their emotions.

5. Students love and adore Korean drama and pop because of its creativeness and

uniqueness

In line with this study, the researchers recommend this for further improvement, due to

the limited resources and lack of concrete data. For the future researchers, it is

recommended to conduct to have a profound understanding about the roots of culture and

language of the target respondents in preparation of bridging the gap of different cultures.

Furthermore, this study could be a future reference and a good beginning for future

developing research in terms of language preference.

23

Narrative

Day 1

We were given our topics and told to brainstorm on the topics that we were given

so that in the future we would not have a hard time, some of us (including me) did not

actually brainstormed but did other things, it was a bad mistake but hey mistakes is a part

of the process and it develops us so we can learn from the past.

Day 2

We were told to propose statements of the problem, while we were on the process

of creating sop’s Ms. Rose gave us templates of her past research and the research of her

classmates, it was really a great help to us because we can get inspiration and base our

research on their researches.

Day 3

We passed our proposals to Ms. Rose, some of us failed and were requested to do

it again but now with the help of Ms. Rose, she was the one that almost made our sop’s

and I thank her for that, it was a big head start and boosted us towards the next part of the

research.

Day 4

After all the revisions that we were going through, we finally were finished in our

sop’s and moved on to create proposals for survey questions, at first we did not know
24

what to do because it was our first time, but as time passes by we have learned to create

surveys that pleased Ms. Rose, she got confused with others survey proposals but in the

end she helped them to create survey proposals.

Day 5

We were finished with the survey proposals so we moved on to create our chapter

1, we were nervous to create our chapter 1 but Ms. Rose gave us formats so that we may

not experience hardships, with the endless revisions we experienced we finished our

chapter 1 and moved on to the next part of the research.

Day 6

We moved on and started doing our chapter 2, this chapter was the most hardest

chapter in this research, we were told to find related literatures so that the foundation of

our research would be fond, endless research day and night, it made me lazy because I’m

really not a patient person but in the end we managed to finish our chapter 2 even if it

took us time to revise and revise.

Day 7

Now don’t blame me but this day I was really lazy, to the point that I only played

games but when got caught I told them that I was doing research, we were told to pass

our chapter 1 and 2 so that we can compile it, after we passed it, it was given back to be

revised because some of us made errors and was needed to be corrected, we finished it

and moved on to the next part of this thesis.

Day 8, 9, 10
25

This were the days that were given to us to conduct survey’s in the specific places

that were given to us, some of us struggled because their target places needed permission

and some of them did not know what to do, until now some of us are not finished with

their surveys, it’s cause they changed their topics and their places. I finished mine thanks

with the help of Ms. Rose.

Day 11

After conducting our surveys we moved on to create our chapter 3 which is the

research design, in short this chapter is the part where we explain our research, how it

was created, and how we constructed it to be like what it is today. This part of the

research was were Ms. Rose got pissed on some of us, I understand her, it’s not easy to

teach and repeat everything you thought again and again.

Day 12

It took us almost days while creating our chapter 3, we based our chapter 3 online,

we used google scholar is a must in creating researches, technically google scholar is a

search engine were when you search something, it will generate conducted researches by

other people, after all the revisions we managed to finish our chapter 3.

Day 13

we moved on and started to create our chapter 4, this is the part were math comes

in, results and discussion, and graph’s, some of us did not know what to do, what formula

to use and what graph to use, it was a hard time for us because we were so tired and

pushed to our limits, but thanks to Ms. Rose for helping us with our chapter 4.

Day 14
26

Revision here, revision there, I think thesis should be the name but revision, just

kidding! It took us time to create our chapter 4, some of us still failed especially on

creating the graph, wrong color scheme, one color scheme, Ms. Rose was angry and told

us to revise, but in the end we managed to finish it.

Day 15

It was this day that we create the hardbound of our research, fast isn’t it? I got

sick and had a loss bowel movement but still managed to finish my research, I am still

nervous on our defense, I don’t know what to say, but deep within me I know God will

give me the strength and courage to fight and be strong.
