Lesson Plan in General Mathematics: The Cartesian Coordinate System

I. Objectives:

At the end of the lesson, the students are able to:

 Define Cartesian Coordinate System
 Perform plotting and naming of points and describing how to get to the point from
the origin in the Cartesian Coordinate System
 Locate different ordered pairs in the Cartesian Coordinate System

II. Subject Matter

Topic: The Cartesian Coordinate System

References: General Mathematics; Pages 422-428

Materials: chart, pen, chalk, reference book, recording/activity sheets

a. Preparation:

1. Cleaning
2. Prayer
3. Greetings
4. Checking of attendance

b. Review

Teacher will recall the previous topics that were discussed.

A. Activity

1. The teacher will ask the students to pair up.

2. Each pair will be given the same set of question and will be asked to go to the board
and answer the given or posted problem regarding the different concepts of the
Cartesian Coordinate System.

B. Analysis

1. What have you notice in your activity?

We noticed that our activity for today is all about concepts related to the
Cartesian Coordinate System.

2. What are these concepts about the Cartesian Coordinate System?

These concepts include the ordered pairs, X-axis, Y-axis, point of origin,
different quadrants, as well as plotting and naming points.
C. Abstraction

1. The teacher will post or write on the board the meaning of Cartesian Coordinate
System and the its quadrants.

 Cartesian Coordinate System is made up of two perpendicular number

lines.
 The 2 number lines separate the coordinate into 4 quadrants.
 The horizontal line is the X-axis.
 The Vertical number is the Y-axis.
 Their intersection is the point of origin.
 (x, y)- ordered pair
 x coordinate or abscissa
 Y coordinate or ordinate
D. APPLICATION

The teacher will call a student to answer the given set of problems orally or on the
board.

1. Name the location (quadrant) of each point.

a. (-5, 6)
b. (2, 3) g. (9, -2)
c. (-5, -5) h. (0, -7)
d. (-7, 8) i. (3, 3)
e. (-4, 4) j. (10, 0)
f. (4, 3)

2. Give the coordinates of each point.

3. Plot the following points.

a. (2, 3) g. (-7, -8)

b. (-5, -4) h. (7, -8)
c. (-2, -3) i. (-7, 8)
d. (5, -3) j. (7, 8)
e. (0, 5)
f. (-5, 0)
