PHY13 PROBLEM SET 1A: Magnetic Force and Magnetic Torque

Prof. R.R. Jimenez

1. A proton is moving with a constant velocity of magnitude 2.00 x 10 5 m/s and it enters a uniform magnetic field
with a magnitude 0.500 T that is directed along the +z-axis. The velocity of the proton lies in the xz-plane at an
angle of 30o with the +z-axis. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force on the proton.
2. An electron beam is fired horizontally from an electron gun with a velocity of 2.00 x 107 m/s in the +x direction. A
uniform magnetic field of magnitude 0.250 T in the –z-direction is then applied. (a) What are the magnitude and
direction of the magnetic force on an electron when the magnetic field is applied? (b) What is the radius of the
electron’s path?
3. The magnetic field between opposite poles of magnets is 0.500 T directed westward. A straight horizontal
conductor carrying a current of 10.0 A is placed in the magnetic field such that the direction of the current is
40.0o SW. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force acting on a 50.0-cm section of the conductor.
4. In Figure 1 below, a triangular loop of wire carries a current of 10.0 A in the direction shown. The loop is in a
uniform magnetic field of 𝐵 ⃗ = (0.300 𝑇)𝑖̂ + (0.400 𝑇)𝑗̂ . Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic force
on segment AB, segment BC, and segment AC. What is the net magnetic force on the whole current loop?
5. In Figure 2, the wire loop consists of four segments. Segments a and b are semicircles of radii 10.0 cm and 15.0
cm respectively. Segments c and d are straight. The current in the loop is 10.0 A. The loop is in a uniform magnetic
field of 0.200 T in the +z direction. Determine the magnetic force on (a) segment A, (b) segment B, (c) segment C,
and (d) segment D.
6. In Figure 3, determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic torque acting on the loop if it is in a uniform
magnetic field of 0.250 T in the –x direction. (b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the magnetic torque
acting on the loop if it is in a uniform magnetic field of 0.250 T in the +z direction
7. In Figure 4, the rectangular wire loop has a weight of 2.00 N/m and is pivoted about side ab on a frictionless axis.
A current of 10.0 A flows around the loop in the direction shown. Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic
field that must be applied so that the loop swings to an angle of 30.0o with the yz-plane.
8. A rectangular loop (Figure 5) carries a current of 20.0 A. The loop is in a uniform magnetic field of 0.500 T in the
+x direction. (a) Find the magnitude and direction of the magnetic torque on the loop if the plane of the loop is
parallel to the xy-plane. (b) If the loop is rotated by 30.0o about the y-axis such that the left end of the loop is
coming out of the plane of the figure, what are the magnitude and direction of the torque required to hold the loop
in that position?
