hamsters and nonhuman primates, through the objective of the retention of peptides for the prophylaxis of Niv in the
respiratory tract. We avoid its systemic delivery in individuals who only need prevention and, therefore, we increase the safety
of the treatment and improve the usefulness of the intervention. These results advanced the objectives of the rational
development of potent lipopeptide inhibitors with desirable pharmacokinetic and biodistribution properties and a safe and
effective delivery method to attack other Niv pathogenic viruses. Summary Vikrant Sharma Since the appearance of the Nipah
virus (NiV) in 1998 in Malaysia, the NiV virus has reappeared on several occasions causing serious infections in the human
population associated with a high mortality rate. NiV has been placed together with the Hendra virus in the genus Henipavirus
of the family Paramyxoviridae. Fruit bats (Genus Pteropus) are known to be natural hosts and reservoirs of NiV. During the
outbreaks of Malaysia and Singapore, the roles of pigs as intermediate hosts were confirmed. The infection is transmitted
from bats to pigs and subsequently from pigs to humans. Severe encephalitis was reported in NiV infection often associated
with neurological disorders. The first NiV outbreak in India occurred in the Siliguri district of West Bengal in 2001, where direct
transmission of the NiV virus from bats to humans and from humans to humans was reported in contrast to the role of pigs
in the NiV outbreak of Malaysia. Regular outbreaks of NiV have been reported from Bangladesh from 2001 to 2015. The last
outbreak of NiV was recorded in May 2018 in Kerala, India, resulting in the death of 17 people. Due to the lack of effective
vaccines and antivirals, Nipah encephalitis represents a major threat to public health. Routine surveillance studies in infected
areas may be useful to detect early signs of infection and help in containment of these outbreaks.
