On-the-Job Training, also known as OJT, is a part of College Curriculum that aims to train
the students about their future career in a normal working situation. Training has specific goal of
improving one’s capability, capacity and performance of a person. OJT help to explore the
relationship between the knowledge & skills acquired in college with those required in the working
area, which also entails significant benefits that could give trainees invaluable assets for achieving
gainful employment. This enables students to understand and respond better to the market demand
and to have sufficient knowledge and skills relevant to work habits necessary to become highly
competitive. Consequently, the training assists individuals in developing professionalism and
interpersonal skills necessary for success in the workplace.

For us students, OJT is the most awaited part in College and we must conform such
requirements. Complying with all the requirements needed to take the Internship Program, we
proceeded to Batangas II Electric Cooperative, Inc. (BATELEC II), which is our chosen company
to help us in our training. We were then accepted to be part of them and assigned us at BATELEC
II, Area I Branch Office at San Jose Batangas. We were eight Electrical Engineering student
trainees destined here.

It was January 21, 2019 when we started our training. We were asked to join the flag
ceremony together with the employees. With this, we were able to know them. Since it was our
first day, we were excited and somewhat nervous because of the new environment and the different
people around us. Before giving our tasks, we were oriented first by our supervisor, Joel A. Flavier,
about the tasks that he may assign to us. He also had short discussion about the different class of
meters, as well as, on how to calibrate them. Also, he let us to familiarize ourselves with the
different tools and equipment they are using. Afterwards, he introduced us to their employees who
may help us throughout the training. We were assigned at Metering and Apprehension/
Confiscation Section.

What we have done at Metering Section?

Metering Section is responsible in the installation, calibration, and clustering of electric
meters
INSTALLATION OF METERS
 Assisting the metering personnel by helping them in carrying the equipment or tools
that they will use
 Getting every details like the name of the consumer, the meter number we installed, the
pole number and any important details of it
 Helping them in communicating with the consumers or complainant

Assisting the linemen in putting and relocating Installing meter base

service drop

Recording of data Compressing the c/c and duplex wire

CALIBRATION OF METERS
 Helping them in removing the meters
 Jotting the details of the meters, name of the consumer who owns it, the meter number
and the last reading that will be tested

Sir Marvin Olave, the Calibrator runs the Learning on how to calibrate
machine to test the meter

Analysing the meter calibration equipment Familiarizing the meter calibration

equipment
CLUSTERING OF METERS
 Helping them in carrying and relocating the service drops or duplex wire
 Bringing the compression tools, c/c, pole step, electrical tape and other tools
 Transporting the ladder
 Getting every details of the old and new meters like the meter and ERC (Electrical
Regulatory Commission) numbers, the initial and last reading, as well as the BATELEC
II seal numbers that were used

Cutting of wire Tapping of duplex wire

What we have learned at Metering Section?

 The terminals of the meter base. The left part terminals is for the hotline, the right part
is for the load, the upper part is the positive terminal, while the lower part is the neutral
terminal
 Idea on how to calibrate single phase meters
 Familiarize with different tools and equipment

What we have done at Apprehension/ Confiscation Section?

Apprehension/ Confiscation Section main role is to inspect and confiscate meters at a
certain area.
 Assisting the personnel in doing their job by carrying the ladder, bringing the tools or
equipment like pliers, electrical tape, meter ring or case, BATELEC seal and sealing wire
 Recording every details which includes the last reading, meter and seal number, and the
name who owns it
 Helping them in putting the ring or case and the seal to the meter

Inspecting of meter Recording of data

Sealing of meter
Covering of meter
What we have learned at Apprehension/ Confiscation Section?

 Different ways of doing pilferage done by the other consumer. Some were putting
magnets around the meter where they believe that it reduces the rotation of the disk while
the others were having illegal tapping so when they consume electricity, it will not register
to the meter. We also learned that it could be possible to change the circuit inside of it by
changing the values of components like the resistor in a design that could lessen in
consuming the electricity even when there is a larger load.

Aside from what have mentioned, we were also taught by Engr. Jay-ar Macalinao about
the testing of the insulation of a transformer. There is a tester used which can detect if the insulation
is good or not. He also taught us the connection when the transformer is additive or subtractive.

Testing the insulation of the transformer Testing if the insulating material has the same
principle as the insulation of the transformer

Also, he showed us the connection of the pole mounted transformer. H1 is connected to

the primary supply, H2 to the primary ground, X1 to the secondary hotline, and X 2 to the secondary
neutral. Transformers are multi-grounded. There is a ground that extends to the soil, ground to the
primary, and as well as for the secondary. He further explains that Y- delta connection is commonly
used because when one transformer is not functioning, there is another one that will take over the
function.
PARTS OF A TRANSFORMER

 Primary bushing (H1 connected to the primary line while H2 is connected to the ground)
 Secondary bushing (X1, X2, X3 are connected to the lines going to residential houses)
 Tap changer (Changes the number of turns of the primary winding that either increases
or decreases the value of the voltage also)
 Pressure Relieve Valve (regulates the temperature of the transformer)
 Ground
 Nameplate (shows serial number, impedance, polarity, etc.)

Furthermore, we were also able to familiarize ourselves with important equipment or

tools, which includes:

Insulation Resistance Tester

- A tester used to test the insulation resistance

of a transformer

Duplex Wire

- Is a multi-conductor cable which allows

maximum flexibility, and prevent corrosion at
the same time
Cluster Box
- A group of meter base in a single box

Single Phase Meter Calibration Equipment

- Suitable to test various types single phase

meters on site and also can be used to test
alternating current parameters.

Cut-out
- A fuse cut-out or cut-out fuse is a
combination of a fuse and a switch, used in
primary overhead feeder lines and taps to protect
distribution transformers from current surges and
overloads
Fuse Link

- Can be applied to a variety of applications

requiring over current protection or distribution

Crimping Tool/ Compression Tool

- A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin

two pieces of metal by deforming one or both of
them in a way that causes them to hold each
other.

During our stay, we, the student-trainees were also able to visit the Main Office of
BATELEC II at Antipolo Lipa City. We were able to visit one of their section, which is the
Rewinding Section. There, we had a chance to witness what is going on in this section with the
help of Sir Mike and Renel Raian Atienza who is our co-trainee assigned there. Rewinding Section
serves as the hospital of every transformers owned by the BATELEC II and where transformers
are tested and rewinded here. They told us that there are five different tests conducted including
the Open-Circuit Test, Short-Circuit Test, Insulation Test, Turns Ratio Test, and the Dielectric Oil
Test. These tests were done to knew if they are defective or not.

Completing the 500 hours internship training was an incredible one. We were glad that we
were already done in our internship, but somehow sad because we will be leaving the people who
were already part of our life, as well as the office which we considered as our new home, where
we had lots of memories with the employees and co-trainees. They taught us not just about our
chosen career, but also about everything, about life, their struggles encountered and how they were
able to solve it, and how to be strong in every challenges we may face in life.

Recommendation

We are recommending every student-trainee and the employees to observe precautionary

measures during working hours especially when they are at the field. Everyone must wear PPE
(Personal Protective Equipment), like hard hats, gloves, or safety shoes.
