CEIT-02-701P QUIZ NO. 1

Discuss each statement/question in your own ideas or concepts.

1.) Give at least 5 importance of engineering utilities for civil engineering students and
explain each in not less than 40 words per importance.

As a civil engineering student, the importance of engineering utilities are:

• To know and to understand the interconnections of building structure and

its subsystems – As this subject matter relies on mechanical systems, sanitary/
plumbing systems, acoustics, and fire protection systems in buildings. We, as an
inspiring engineers make solutions for creating a sustainable and secure energy
future include lowering maintenance loads and integrating highly efficient
performance energy systems into buildings.
• Duties to design, process, deliver, implement, maintain and deliver utility
infrastructures safely - We should learn the fundamentals of handling utility
engineering works involving electricity grids, water, gas main, and other types of
delivery systems. Therefore, for unnecessary emergency situations like leakage
for an instance, they get to know insights on how to deal with these problems.
• Manage complex engineering works and reports pertaining to the designated
areas of responsibility and take part in their development in building utilities
- Students were trained and learned how to become a problem-solver. For site
problems that they may encounter in the field of industry, they will task how to
resolve problems and see how things work in real life situations. Being a utility
engineer, they must have analytical skills as well as extensive knowledge of
mechanical ability to monitor and improve energy systems.
• Learn how to oversees the energy resources within the industrial field -
Determining ways to reduce wasted energy and measuring the quantity of energy
discharged, must test quality inspections with technological energy equipment to
ensure its stability and efficiency. We must also know how to evaluate the energy
essential for an area and suggests techniques to improve reliability.
• Perform the tasks of establishing and maintaining corrective maintenance
and emergency response services - Becoming an engineer, we must know the
safety and preventive measurements in emergency responses and how to
troubleshoot the problem. Knowledgeable and skilled on handling and managing
the proper ways to orderly execute and/or utilize the issues encounter in sites
inventories.
2.) How can you apply different set-up of electrical systems in residential, commercial and
industrial buildings?

For electrical systems in residential buildings, it is typically served by a 120/240 V, three

wire, single-phase service entrance. Through underground or overhead service entrance
lines, power from an exterior ground-pole-mounted utility transformer is supplied to the
building's service equipment. from one panelboard with a rating of 100 to 200 A or more
branch circuits are used to supply power throughout the residences. For commercial
buildings like condominiums and apartments, a utility transformer supplies electricity to
the building service equipment. Then, it is divided at a main distribution panel, distributed
through individual meters, and delivered to each dwelling unit via feeders. The electricity
flows into the building after leaving the meter, at which point all wiring, panels, and
equipment become the property of the building owner. Electricity is transferred by wires
from the meter to a panel board, which is often found in the garage or basement of a
residence. While for industrial buildings, massive industrial buildings demand a lot of
electricity, which necessitates a wide range of systems for various building applications.
The equipment used contains many safety features since it is a large structure, such as
circuit breakers, which allow power to be terminated downstream. This might happen
accidentally or on purpose so that technicians can work on particular branches of the
power system.

3.) Enumerate and discuss each briefly the common electrical materials and equipment
that included in different building constructions.
1. Circuit Breaker - A circuit breaker is a type of electrical safety device used to
protect against overcurrent or short circuit damage to an electrical circuit. Its
primary purpose is to stop the flow of current in order to protect equipment and
lower the danger of a fire.
2. Convenience Outlet - The rectangular device has various plugging options. This
is a beneficial outlet that simultaneously supplies energy to many appliances.
3. Electrical Boxes - Switches, convenience outlets, and other electrical devices are
mounted in electrical boxes, which are boxes where all electrical wiring
connections are made plugs for incandescent bulbs.
4. Electrical Conduit (Wiring Pipe) - An electrical conduit is a tube used to contain
electrical cables for a number of structural or building applications. Conduit covers
the wires and anyone who could be in close proximity to them.
5. Electrical Tape - In order to insulate electrical cables and other materials that
conduct electricity, one sort of pressure-sensitive tape is called electrical tape. It
can be manufactured of a variety of plastics, but PVC is the most widely used since
it stretches easily and provides reliable insulation.
6. Electrical Transformer - A transformer is an electrical energy transfer device that
either steps up or steps down the voltage from one alternating-current circuit to
one or more other circuits.
7. Electrical Wires and Conductors - These are the routes that electricity travels to
go between one point to another. It has two types which are stranded wire is made
up of several individual wire strands that have been connected to form a single
wire; and solid wire with only one strand of copper or aluminum running through
it.
8. Energy Meter - A residential building, a business, or an electrically powered item
can detect how much energy is consumed over time by using an energy meter,
which is an electrical device that measures the electrical power being used.
9. Fuse - Fuse is a type of electrical safety device used to protect an electrical circuit
from overcurrent damage. Its essential component is a metal wire or strip that
melts when too much current flows through it, thereby stopping or interrupting the
current.
10. Lightbulb Socket - A device that mechanically holds and provides electrical
connections for an appropriate electric lamp base is known as a lightbulb socket,
also known as a lightbulb holder, light socket, lamp socket, or lamp holder.
11. Male Plug - An electrical component called a plug is put into a convenience outlet
and connected to a flat cord that has an appliance or other current-consuming
device on one end and conducts power to it on the other.
12. Panelboard - A wall-mounted distribution cabinet with a collection of panels is
called a panelboard. It is a device that protect lighting, appliance, and power
distribution branch circuits against overcurrent and short circuits.
13. Switch - The most typical electrical component you use on a daily basis is a switch.
This is a piece of electrical equipment that serves in reversing the direction of an
electrical circuit's current flow (connect or disconnect).
14. Water Pump - The additional boost required to raise your water pressure to the
optimum level is provided by a water pump. Water from a storage tank or across
a complete house or commercial building can be moved under pressure with the
help of a water booster pump.
