Note: Attempt all questions

Assume missing data, if any, suitably

Q.1 (a) What are various energy sources available in India? Discuss in detail the (05)
impact of conventional energy usage on the environment.

Q.1 (b) Show graphically or by the help of a clean diagram that how the primary (2)
energy demands in India is catered by different energy sources?

Q.1 (c) Steam at 3Mpa and 400 C enters an adiabatic nozzle steadily with a velocity
of 40 m/sec and leaves at 2.5 MPa and 300 m/sec. Determine (a) the exit (3)
temperature and (b) the ratio of inlet to exit area.

Q.2 (a) Sun is generally referred to as 'power house' of the planet Earth. In context (02)
to this what do you understand by the terms 'solar radiation', 'terrestrial
radiation', and 'extra terrestrial radiation'? Give wavelength spectrum
distribution of solar radiation.

Q.2 (b) Discuss all the Solar-Earth Angles in detail along with their salient features (04)
and diagrams.

Q.2 (c) Assume yourself roaming on the streets of Delhi, India (0 = 28° 35') on 20th (04)
day of July at around 10:00 am and 2:00 pm noon. What would be the solar
intensity in the extraterrestrial region at that time? Also figure out what
would be the solar zenith angle, hour angle at 10:00 am and 02:00 pm?
Also determine the angle of solar declination.

Q.3 (a) Solar cells are becoming quite popular now days. Explain what are solar (03)
cells? How are they made? And what is the working principle of solar cells?
Support your answer with diagrams where applicable.

Q3. (b) On average, every square meter of Earth's surface receives 164 watts of (03)
solar energy but, not all the received energy is entrapped. Explain what
different types of collectors are prevalent in the market? Discuss
concentrated solar power system (CSP) in detail with diagram.

Q3. (c) Due to highly intermittent nature of solar radiation, it is required to store
sun's energy when available in excess. Give various types of solar energy (04)
storage systems. Explain the construction and working of a solar pond.
