Fads and crazes of the sixties An interview with Tony Swanson, a pop culture historian.
How were the 1960s different?
The 1960s was the decade of self-expression. People were breaking away from the more
conservative ways of the 1950s. Bright and colourful fashion, pop music and new technology
defined the era as a time of revolution. (1 ___)
What was one of the strangest crazes?
Ant farms probably. These started when ‘Uncle Milton’ Levine took a clear plastic box and
made it into a prototype for the ant farm. And what a prototype it was! (2 ___) People used to
buy the farm, and the ants were posted separately.
What did people use to wear?
This was the beginning of the hippie era. People wore flowers in their hair and floral prints on
their tops. Men used to wear tie-dye T-shirts and women wore miniskirts. (3 ___) Large,
oversized sunglasses were also very popular.
What did young people use to listen to?
Like fashion, music in the 1960s was varied and evolving. The era is famous as the decade
when The Beatles became incredibly popular. (4 ___) Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones and
The Beach Boys were new and exciting. While their parents were at home, many teenagers
were out dancing at music festivals.
Did people have technology similar to today?
Well, not quite, but a lot of the technology we know today was first seen in or evolved from
the 1960s. One of the first digital computer games, Spacewar!, was created in 1961. (5 ___)
