Cabled Headband

I love cables and small projects that can be knit „on the go“ and done in
one day. I made this a couple of years ago and still love to wear it.

You will need:

* No more than 50g of a Sport or DK weight yarn (approx 200-330m / 100g)

* Knitting needles size 7/4.5mm (short circulars or DPNs – whichever you like)
* 1 button approx. 28Mm (1.1 inch)
* cable needle

Abbreviations:

k knit k2tog knit the next 2 stitches together

p purl C4F place next 2 st on cable needle and hold in front
st stitch of work, k2, then k2 from cable needle
m stitch marker C4B place next 2 st on cable needle and hold behind
kfb knit in front and back loop (=1 st increased) work, k2, then k2 from cable needle
ssk slip the next 2 sts individually as to knit, place both b/o bind off
sts back on left needle, k together through back loop c/o cast on

PART I

Cast on 11 stitches

Row 01 kfb, (k1, p1) until 2 sts are left, k1, kfb (+ 2 stitches)
Row 02 k2, (p1, k1) until 3 sts are left, p1, k2
Row 03 kfb, (p1, k1) until 2 sts are left, p1, kfb (+2 stitches)
Row 04 (k1, p1) until 1 st is left, k1

Repeat these 4 rows three more times (a total of 16 rows knitted, 27 sts on your needle).
On your last row, place stitch markers as follws: after the 8th stitch and 8 sts before the end.

PART II

To calculate just how long this part needs to be, simply measure the desired head circumference and PART I.
Circumference minus 2 x PART I = length for PART II
The end will overlap a little, but that makes for a snug fit.

Note: In case you do not like seed stitch, you can also do this in stockinette. It will have a less „solid“ feel to it, though.
For a stockinette version, simply knit the stitches between the markers on rows 01 and 03, and purl between
markers on rows 02 and 04.

Row 01 k2, p1, k4, (p1, k1) to m, p1, k4, p1, k2

Row 02 k1, p1, k1, p4, k2 (p1, k1) to m, k1, p4, k1, p1, k1
Row 03 k2, p1, C4F, (p1, k1) to m, p1, C4B, p1, k2
Row 04 k1, p1, k1, p4, k2 (p1, k1) to m, k1, p4, k1, p1, k1

Slip markers as you go. Repeat these 4 rows as many times as required for your headband, ending at Row 02.

PART III

Row 01 k1, ssk, (p1, k1) until 4 sts before end, p1, k2tog, k1 (remove all markers as you come across them)
Row 02 (k1, p1) until 1 st is left, k1
Row 03 k1, ssk, (k1, p1) until 4 sts before end, k1, k2tog, k1
Row 04 k1, p1, (p1, ki1) until 3 sts are left, p2, k1

Repeat these 4 rows twice more (12 rows knitted, 15 sts left on your needle)

For the button hole, knit the last 4 rows as follows:

Row 01 k1, ssk, p1, k1, p1, b/o 3 sts, p1, k1, p1, k2tog, k1
Row 02 (k1, p1) x2, k1, c/o 3 sts, (k1, p1) x2, k1
Row 03 k1, ssk, (k1, p1) until 4 sts before end, k1, k2tog, k1
Row 04 k1, p1, (p1, ki1) until 3 sts are left, p2, k1

Bind off all sts, attach button to PART I – and you're done :)
