CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Situational Analysis

Mathematics is considered the mother of all learning in both arts and

sciences. It is essential in almost every field: measurement in fashion, angles in

sports, technology, and economics (Andaya, 2014). This perspective on

Mathematics has gained more attention with the rapid advances of information

and communication. Mathematics is not just computation but a tool for

understanding structures, relationships, and patterns to produce solutions for

complex real life problems. Mathematics is a necessity for people of all ages to

be successful in life.

Despite the usefulness of mathematics in daily life, there are factors that

adversely affect the students’ ability to understand and apply mathematics

concepts.

One of the key factors that affect the student’s learning is the learning

resources. Learning resources are things that can help the students to learn

(Right, 2018). They can support the student’s learning and significantly

increase the student’s achievement however not all can expect to achieve the

same result as the others.

In the recent Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)

which was done by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and

Development (OECD) in the year 2018, Philippines ranked in the low 70s

among the 79 countries that participated (Paris, 2019). Filipino students got

353 points in mathematics against the OECD average of 489 points. Despite

the shocking event that happened, this clearly shows that students across the

Philippines are having a hard time learning and mastering mathematics unlike

the other countries.Through this reason, the researchers conducted this study.

Objectives of the Study

The objectives of the study are:

1. To identify which learning resource is effective to students.

2. To know the difference between the impacts of different learning

resources.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the impacts of different learning resources

to the academic learning of the PUP SHS students in mathematics. This study,

specially sought to answer the following queries:

1. Is the a significant difference between the impacts of different learning

resources to the academic learning of the students?

2. Which of the learning resources have a siginificant effect to the student?

Importance of the Study

This study aims to determine the impacts of different learning resources

to the students’ academic learning in mathematics. Specifically this study is

intended to:

Students

They can expand their knowledge in knowing the different learning

resources and choose their preferred resources for them to learn math

effectively based on the results that the researchers will be getting.

Teachers

The teachers will have a broader view on what learning resources do

they have to use for them to effectively teach their students in mathematics.

Future Researchers

They can use this as a basis for their future studies as well as a guide on

what topic they will choose.

METHODOLOGY

Location & Time of the Study

The researchers will conduct the study to the premises of the Polytechnic

University of the Philippines (PUP). Due to a very limited time and for a rapid

response, the respondents of the study will be the Senior High Schoolstudents of

the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP). This study will be conducted

during the second semester of the researchers, specifically during the month of

January.

The Subject

The repondents will be the Senior High School students of Polytechnic

University of the Philippines. The sample size of the researchers will be a total

of 10 respondents. Each researcher will handle 2 respondents for them to

observed the respondents effectively.
