Topic: Selectivity studies on the catch composition and revenue generation in trawl fishing
gear.

Abstract:

The investigation was carried out to know the impact of 28 mm square mesh
and diamond meshes cod ends of High Opening Bottom Trawl (HOBT) on
different sizes of dominant fin fishes. The fishing trails were carried out by using a
vessel M.F.V. Dolphin with 13.26 m OAL of wooden stern trawler. The mesh size
and shape of the codend meshes were selected to exploit the desired size groups
and to avoid capturing of juveniles in order to conserve the fishery resources.
During the experiments, it has been observed that the diamond meshes
becomes narrow at the middle of the cod end causing the mesh lumen to be almost
close during trawling and hence the probability of escapement of undersized and
juveniles are in remote. Further, it has also been observed that the cod end when
filed assumes bulbous shape and fish escape through a small area of open meshes
in front of the bulb, while forward of these point most of the meshes are stretched
and closed. The flow of water also depends on the shape of meshes for improving
the filtering efficiency of the meshes; the mesh has to remain open facilitating
more water flow and easy escape of young fishes, where as in square mesh
codends it did not affect the performance of the gear. The selection properties of
the trawl net improved and no significant loss was increased due to use of square
mesh codends. Though the mesh size optimization for multiple species in the cod
end and modeling for future valve of the escapees were need to be worked out.
To estimate the potential short-term economic loss as a result of replacing
the commercial diamond mesh with square mesh codend, to compare fish lengths
captured in 40 mm square (S40) Vs 44 mm commercial hand-woven diamond
mesh (CD44) codend for six commercial species Red mullet (Mullus barbatus),
Common pandora (Pagellus erythrinus), Bogue (Boops boops), European hake
(Merluccius merluccius), Axillary seabream (Pagellus acarne), and Brushtooth
lizardfish (Saurida undosquamis) were observed. A total of 20 hauls (10 hauls-
S40 and 10 hauls- CD44) were conducted onboard a commercial trawler in Mersin
Bay in the North Eastern Mediterranean. Hence results showed that 40 mm square
mesh cod end caught significantly fewer juveniles of all aforementioned species.
However, when changing from the commercial diamond codend to the 40 mm
square mesh codend the potential economic loss of revenue was found to be 40%
during the study period, which covered the final 6 weeks of the fishing season.
