Balance shaft unit

Technical Training
DC9 5 cylinder

In an engine with five cylinders, three cylinders fire on one rotation and two on the
other rotation. This causes imbalance in the engine, which generates vibration.
To counteract this vibration the engine has a balancer shaft unit.

The balancing system

• Balance shafts rotate twice as fast as the crankshaft

• Different concepts tried – best chosen

• Balance shafts are driven by a gear on the crankshaft

(maintenance free)

• Transmission close to flywheel (lowest noise, best durability)

• Extensive field testing – no problems

Summary DC9

• The new 9-litre is a 5-cylinder Engine, with

230, 270 and 310 hp
• The new 9-litre engine is part of the modular
engine family, most parts are the same with
D12 and technology is known
• Higher exhaust brake output 180 kW
• Higher Power Take-Off torque 600 Nm
• EMS, 4-valve technique, combustion
chamber and PDE
• Long field test experience:
- It is strong, reliable and efficient. With power,
outstanding torque, drivability and low fuel
consumption

2. Remove the oil pump strainer. 2 3
3. Loosen the balance shaft unit.

5 3

3 4. Undo the entire balancer shaft assembly

4

Dismantling the balancer shaft unit

3. Remove the bearing caps and bearings.
- If the bearings will be reused, they must be refitted in the same place.

5. Remove the balancer shafts.

- Mark the balancer shafts so that they can be refitted in their original positions .

3. Remove the balance shaft
gears.
These are marked L and R,
and there is corresponding
labelling on the bearing cap.
4. Reset the balance shafts.
Use a drift, se illustration B
5. Clean the balance shaft.
6. Refit the shaft gears see C.

and there is corresponding
labelling on the bearing cap.
7. Remove the drift
8. Fit the oil pump and sump.
