Portland Timbers midfielder Diego Chara

discusses his 10 seasons in the Rose City.
It’s our 10th season as a club in MLS and
your 10th season playing for The Timbers as
well. How much has the club grown, on and off
the field since you arrived in Portland?
“The club has grown a lot. When I first arrived,
almost nine years ago, we didn’t have a training
center and often times we trained at the stadi-
um. However, our fan base remains exactly the
same, which is a privilege as a player. I think
the club has achieved a lot and has participat-
ed in many activities with the community. For
instance, creating Stand Together has made the
club more visible within the community and has
given a lot of people the opportunity to partici-
pate and become a part of the club.”

When you were younger, could you ever have

imagined having kids in a different country?
“I never thought I’d have children outside of
Colombia. Our first daughter was born in Colombia
in 2009 and we were in a different state of mind in
terms of what we wanted to do with our lives. Then
the opportunity to move to the United States came
along and after talking it over as a family we made
a decision that made us very happy. We feel great
personally, professionally and as a family.”

Your brother Yimmi is now on the team. You last played

with him 10 years ago. Does it feel like a full circle
moment for your family to be in Portland together?
“It sure does! The type of support I feel is very different
now that Yimmi is Portland. This is the first time that I
am going to have family close to me. I have many good
friends who feel like family, but having my brother and
his family feels great and I can already tell this year will
be a very meaningful year from a family standpoint.” Having my brother and

is something Major League Soccer gave me the
opportunity to do and I feel very happy about that.”
