Taxonomic System of
Classification
Grade Level 8
Time Allotment 60 minutes
Implementer Cheira M. Tarayao
Learning competencies:
Objectives:
Given a series of discussion and activities the students are expected to:

1. Define Biodiversity and Heirarchical Taxonomy

2. Describe the main levels of taxonomy
3. Identify how an organisms are classified by the scientists
4. Demonstrate how to classify organisms according to their characteristics and
levels

ELICIT (Access prior knowledge). Materials

Show students a picture of different organisms such Laptop

as plants and animals in one place then ask the TV monitor
students how will they describe the picture. Pictures

ENGAGE (Get the students’ minds focused on the topic (short question or picture).

Ask students these following questions: Chart

2. Does cats and tigers belong in the same family? Pictures
3. How do you classify an organism?

EXPLORE (Provide students with a common experience).

Group the class into four groups. Each group will be Puzzle chart
pair in line, the first pair in line will find any word in Pen and paper
the puzzle be it (plants, animals or a place). The
word that the first pair in line will find will be passed
into the last pair, then the last pair will go to the
front and write the word from the puzzle in the
board. And the rest of the pair will do the same
within 10 minutes.
EXPLAIN (Teach the concept. Should include interaction between teacher and
students)

1. Explain what is Biodiversity and its level

2. Differentiate the levels of Biodiversity TV monitor

4. Describe how an organism is identify and
classified according to their characteristics
5. Discuss the Evolution of Taxonomy

1. Describe the major categories of

classification. Laptop
2. Show more pictures of organisms according Video
to its classification. TV monitor

EVALUATE (How will you know the students have learned the concept)?

The students will answer a test to evaluate what Pencil and Paper
they learn about the lesson.(10 minutes)

Identifcation: Identify the following, answer

directly in a 1/4 sheet of paper

1. The branch of biology that deals with

classifying organisms
2. Father of modern taxonomy

consists of two words — a generic name and a
specific name.
4. The first to develop a system where he
classified organisms into two: plants and
animals
