Lesson Plan: Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

A. Standards: Content knowledge, learning about Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation are

important for students to know since they will come across it in the future in their

careers. I am practicing to teach students the concept in a way they understand it,

defining these two types of motivation and examples which will help them better

understand it. With this I am hoping to know what I am teaching and how to connect

what they are learning to their personal life, so they can use it to their advantage.

Assessment, in this area I am practicing to assess my students or seeing if they get the

concept. I will try to get the class involved with the lecture not just me talking hoping

they get what I am saying. I want to see if giving them a worksheet which they can

write and give their own examples if the material actually stays with them.

1. Objectives: SWBAT: define what are Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation in

their own words. (Knowledge level)

SWBAT: determine how knowing Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation is

important to know for their future careers. (Application level)

B. Materials/Equipment: a writing utensil (pen or pencil), and a worksheet answering

four questions that will be provided by me.

C. Procedure: Introduction: Ask students what keeps them motivated, which has to

deal with the lesson about types of motivation.

Explain: I will tell the students that I have a power point to go with the lesson as I

teach the lesson. After that I will pass out the work sheet I have prepared for them

that asks them to define intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and give one example from

the slide show and another example of their own. I will let them know that they will

do it at the end of the lesson before the closure.

Details:

 Before starting the lecture I will give them a worksheet and let them know

they can work on it during or after the presentation.

 In the first slide of the presentation it is just the topic of what we are going to

learn.

 The second slide is the definition of intrinsic motivation and examples. I will

tell students what are advantages and disadvantages of this style which is not

on the slide.

 The next slide is defining extrinsic motivation and giving examples, as in the

other slide, this slide I will give advantages and disadvantages that go along

with the type of motivation.

 The next slide there is a video explaining to them the motivations and another

example.

 Before moving to the last slide I will tell them to finish off their worksheet

give them maybe three minutes and then move on.

 The last slide is asking them to discuss why these two types of motivations

are important to know going in the career of education, and how they can

implement it in their classroom. Afterwards I will ask if anyone wants to share

their examples and which type of motivation is better and why.

Learning Styles: This lesson has the three types of motivation. Auditory, I will be

telling them the definitions and have class discussions. Visually, there is a video

demonstrating the two motivations. Last one kinesthetic, they will be writing stuff

down.

D. Closure: my closure will be asking them why they think teachers need these two

types of motivation and how could they implement it in a classroom.

E. Assessment: my assessment would be the worksheet I gave them, to see if they can

define intrinsic and extrinsic in their own words and give their own examples. The

assessment has a knowledge level by giving a definition and application level by

giving examples of the types of motivation. Also evaluation level when discussing in

class to decide which motivation is better and evaluate how they can implement it in

their future classrooms.
