Lesson Plan  
Book: Hello!, Rachel  Isadora,  2010

Multicultural  Theme

Materials:

The book Hello! By Rachael Isadora, Computers or Ipads, Hat, slips of paper with different countries,
Fact Finding work sheet, plain paper, construction paper, marker, crayons, glue, printer and scissors

Standard

• SS.3.16. Analyze how migrants and immigrants interact with people in their new
community.
• CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key words, sidebars,
hyperlinks) to locate information relevant to a given topic efficiently.

Objective

Students will be able to analyze information using technology to research about specific cultures
individually by creating presentation boards of their research with 95% accuracy.  

Procedure
 
1. Introduce: Show the book Hello! By Rachael Isadora and say, “Today we are going discover
how people greet each other in different cultures. How do you guys greet other people? How do
you greet your friends in the morning? A discussion about how different cultures has different
ways of saying, “hi” to each other.”  
2. Read:  Teacher  reads  the  book  aloud  
 
3. Discuss:  
• Question 1: Can anyone relate to someone in the book?  
• Question 2: What differences between character interactions did you guys notice? What
are some similarities?  
• Question 3: Why is it important to learn how to greet someone?  
• Question 4: Where can you use these new ways to say “hello”  
• Question 5: Do we always say “hello” when we greet someone or is there other ways to
greet someone?  
Activities    

1. Students  will  draw  a  strip  of  paper  with  a  country  written  on  it  out  of  a  hat    
2. Students will use computers or iPads to research how the people in that country say “Hello” to
each other  
3. Students will then fill out Fact Finding Work Sheet using computers or iPads to find facts.  
4. Students  will  print  the  flag  of  the  country  they  are  researching  about  
5. Students  will  color  flag  accordingly  with  markers,  and  crayons    
6. Students  also  need  to  find  3  images  to  print  out  to  go  along  with  their  research  like  food,  map  of  
the  country,  etc.  
7.  Students  will  create  a  presentation  board  using  print  outs  and  flag  with  construction  paper,  
plain  paper,  marker,  crayons,  glue  and  scissors  
8. Students  will  present  their  presentation  boards  to  class  and  then  as  a  class  we  will  hang  each  
board  outside  our  classroom  for  everybody  to  see.    

Evaluation    

Teacher  will  have  each  student  present  his  or  her  project  to  class  for  accuracy.
