• 1950
• NLN had identified course content dealing with teaching
• American Nurses Association (ANA) promulgated that
patient teaching is an integral aspect of nursing practice.
• International Council of Nurses (ICN) endorsed
education for health as an essential requisite of nursing

• Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital
Organizations (JCAHO) delineated nursing standards for
patient education.
• 1998
• Pew Health Professions Commission recommended set
of competencies that deal with the teaching role of health

Million Lives Campaign”.

• HEALTH EDUCATION
—is a process with intellectual, psychological, and social
dimensions relating to activities that increase the abilities of
people to make informed decisions affecting their personal,
family, and community wellbeing. The process based on
scientific principles, facilitates learning and behavior change in
both health personnel and consumers, including children and
youth (Joint Committee for Health Education).
