SECTION A

Answer ALL questions in this section.

EACH question is worth 16 marks.

1. (a) List THREE benefits of work. (3 marks)

(b) State THREE different factors that can influence a person's level of preparation for a
career. (3 marks)

(c) Three Form 5 (Grade I l) students were exploring career options. They learnt that all the
careers they were interested in required either a Bachelor's or an Associate Degree, work
experience, computer skills, cooperation skills and other social skills.

Recommend FIVE actions which the students should take to prepare themselves for these
careers. (10 marks)

2. (a) (i) List THREE ways in which a student can obtain money legally, apart from having
ajob or asking parents. (3 marks)

(ii) State THREE reasons for making a budget. (3 marks)

(b) Herbert intends to staft university in September and will live with his parents during this
time. They will pay for his tuition and books but he has to take care of his daily expenses.
He has been assured of a part-time job as soon as he leaves school and plans to make a
monthly budget as soon as he starts working.

(i) List FOUR important items of expenditure that Herbert should include on his
priority list. (4 marks)

(ii) Explain THREE important guidelines Herbert should consider in prioritizing a list
of items for a monthly budget for his first year of university. (6 marks)

3. (a) Explain THREE steps that a family, living near to a shoreline, should take after a flood
warning has been issued during a prolonged rainstorm or hurricane. (6 marks)

(b) During a study group session, a teenager trips over computer cables and fell. It appears
that her leg is fractured. The ambulance is summoned but the station is an hour away and
there is an unscheduled closing of the bridge in town.

As a certified first aider, list the steps that should be taken in attending to the injured
teenager while awaiting the arrival of an ambulance. (4 marks)

(c) Explain THREE safety precautions that should be taken to avoid a similar type of accident
in (b) above from occurring in the future. (6 marks)

(b) A family comprises a mother, twelve-year-old son and fifteen-year-old daughter. Both
\ children are expected to attend university after leaving secondary school. The mother also
plans to complete her nursing degree which was interrupted when her husband died.

(i) State ONE goal and ONE value of the family described in (b) above. (2 marks)

(ii) In relation to the situation stated in (b) above, outline TWO important steps the
family should take to achieve its goals. (4 marks)

(iii) State TWO important qualities the children need to demonstrate in order to achieve
their goal and give ONE reason why EACH quality is important.

6. (a) Explain how any THREE factors can affect the size of the population of a country.
(6 marks)

(b) Coconut Field Community is a small town where the sugar and coconut industries have
died and people are moving away in search ofjob opportunities. Only about ten per cent
of males in the l7-30 age group are still living in the community.

(i) Explain THREE effects that the situation outlined in (b) above will have on the
community if the industries are not revived. (6 marks)

(ii) State TWO possible actions which the community could take to reduce the negative
impact of the situation outlined in (b) above. (4 marks)
