INSTRUCTIONAL PROJECT 4: SAMPLE LESSON PLAN

Date: 2/24/2020
Teacher: Kutsiye Yilmaz
Subject: Science/8th Grade
Topic: Speed, Velocity, and Acceleration(8.6B)
Time: 90 minutes

TEKS
TEKS: 8.6 The student knows that there is a relationship between force, motion, and energy. The
student is expected to:

(B) Differentiate between speed, velocity, and acceleration. (Supporting Standard)

Modifications/Differentiated Instruction

● In the introduction, I will use a think-pair-share by question-answer activity for they will share
information in cooperative learning interactions.
● I will use strategic learning techniques, such as concept mapping, drawing, memorizing,
comparing, contrasting, and reviewing to acquire basic and grade-level vocabulary.
● I will use visual, contextual, and linguistic support to enhance and confirm understanding of
increasingly complex and elaborated spoken language. (ELL/ SpEd Support).
●For the weak students, simpler sentences for each type of verbal can be written on the board
so they can use them as a guide.
● For the stronger students, an additional worksheet with a more complicated task will be given
as an assignment.

Learning Plan:
Prior Knowledge:

6.8B The student is expected to identify and describe the changes in position, direction, and
speed of an object when acted upon by unbalanced forces.
6.8C The student is expected to calculate average speed using distance and time
measurements.
6.8C The student is expected to calculate average speed using distance and time
measurements. 6.8D The student is expected to measure and graph changes in motion.

Future Connections:

The student is expected to investigate and describe applications of Newton's law of inertia, law of force
and acceleration, and law of action-reaction such as in vehicle restraints, sports activities, amusement
park rides, Earth's tectonic activities, and rocket launches.

Learning Objective:
Students will be able to differentiate between speed, velocity, and acceleration

Key Vocabulary:
Force: capacity to do work or cause physical change
Motion: act or process of changing position or place
Energy: capacity of a physical system to perform work
Speed: the rate of motion
Velocity: the rate of change of the position of an object, equivalent to a specification of its speed and
direction of motion
Acceleration: change of speed or velocity

ELL/ SpEd Support (Review as needed with whole class)

Describe: to represent in words or by a figure, model, or picture.

Model: a small object, usually built to scale, that represents in detail another, often larger object.
Differentiate: to perceive the difference in or between.
Recognize: to acknowledge formally.

Materials:
Copies of a warm-up question for each student
Copies of Student Handout (per student) and Activity Cards (per student)
Scissors (per student), Glue stick (per student),
Board and markers
Projector and computer
A4 size blank paper cut in half (according to number of groups)
Copies of post assignment worksheet

Instructional Delivery:

Warm-Up : Questions/Answer Activity(8 minutes)

I give the above warm-up question's paper. They will glue it to their journal. First, student
answer this question. After they finish discuss their answers with their table partner. Finally, I
chose the students from each group. They share their answers in the class. I share my answer
too.

Explain:

Definition: 15 minutes

● After introducing the topic, display the power point and provide the explanation in detail. Pause and
clarify the students when they have questions. (I do). Also students copy this information to jour
Journal. (you do)

● Here is link of the Speed, Velocity & Acceleration PowerPoint from Devin Weiss on Prezi

https://prezi.com/4v0r61crz_qg/speed-velocity-acceleration/
Watch Video: 10 minutes
●I will show this video. I will pause and discuss with students.

Guided Practice: 10 minutes

We will do group work and each group has 4 students. Students complete a Sort Card to
differentiate between examples of speed, velocity, and acceleration. I will give Student Handout
and Activity Cards from Stemscopes for each student. Students will work with a group partner
sort the cards and glue each card in the appropriate column on the Student Handout provided. I
will remind students to raise their hands so answers can be checked before gluing. I will review
the activity to check answers with the students and re-emphasize the key differences between
speed, velocity, and acceleration.

Independent Practice: 15 minutes

I form groups of three to have a group competition. Handout 8 pieces of a sheet for each group
and I will tell them there will be 8 questions and they will use one sheet for each question. I will
give to copy Vocabulary matching and work bank from Stemscopes of group competition.
Groups will match the term to the correct definition and use the clues provided to fill in the
blanks. They will have 30 seconds for each question. One speaker can be chosen for each group
or they can read out their group response in turns. After setting everything, I will start the
competition and record the results. The winning team can get extra credits or some other
rewards.

Evaluation (Formative and Summative Assessment):

●While students doing the warm-up question, I will move around and follow if they have any difficulty
with speed as background knowledge

●During the guided practice students, I will be observed to see if they are using the differential between
speed, acceleration, and velocity properly or not.

●Students will share their understanding of the topic with their classmates.

●The group competition results will be graded, and the post assignment worksheet will be given to
evaluate the performance of the students.

Summative Assessment-15 minutes

8.6 B- POST-ASSESSMENT-Work Sheet -10 minutes

Closure: 7 minutes
●At the end of the competition, I ask each group to share one or two sentences (depending on the
number of groups) of what they have learned with the class. Encourage them not to repeat what the
previous group/s have shared already.

●I will help them with corrections or clarifications and complete revising the topic before giving the
assignment sheets.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWER
Warm-Up Question and Answer
Question: What is speed? How do you calculate the speed of an object?
Answer: Speed is the distance an object travels divided by the time. It
takes the object to travel that distance (s=d/t).
