System Start-up and Shutdown

1 System Start-up and Shutdown

Scripts are provided for starting and stopping the Spectrum Power 3 system and for rebuilding the shared memory image used by
the system. All scripts reside in the directory
$SPECPATH/MCS_CONF
Note that the names of the start-up and shutdown scripts are all upper case. A script provides a shorthand method of changing to
this directory. To move to the directory, simply type:

1.6 IMAGESOS
IMAGESOS creates the shared memory image used by Spectrum Power 3. This is normally required only when a server is initially
configured or following significant configuration change which affects the shared memory image.

NOTE: IMAGESOS does perform a STOPSOS; it does not perform an INITSOS. Therefore, IMAGESOS will stop a server, but will
not automatically restart it. Because of the time and potential loss of redundancy involved, this script should be used advisedly.

Management Utilities

2 Management Utilities
Spectrum Power 3 provides a number of utilities which are useful in monitoring and controlling the network of computers and
software which comprise the Spectrum Power 3 system.

2.1 Spectrum Power 3 Error Message Help

Spectrum Power 3 generates error messages which look like:
Feb 22 14:55:07 com1p user:notice mvrp : 2330 ADRMES read 2 829
This message includes:
Date and time of occurrence (Feb 22 14:55:07)

dem-puma Manager Utility

3 dem-puma Manager Utility

The dem utility is used to transmit softbus orders to program puma. It may be used to turn Spectrum Power 3 loggers on or off as in
the following examples:
dem <name> on
dem <name> off
Where:
name is the name of the printer, usually something like “LP01”.
The utility need not be executed on the computer to which the printer is connected, however softbus must be available on the
computer on which the command is entered, as well as on the computer to which the printer is connected. When the printer is turned
on, it will normally print a page eject and a header line.

sos-Spectrum Power 3 System Statistics

4 sos-Spectrum Power 3 System Statistics

Spectrum Power 3 collects a wide variety of statistics, as well as other information about the system. These may be viewed in real
time by running the sos utility in a window logged in to the server on which they are being collected. A number of general statistics
and status information are displayable which will be meaningful to most users of the system. However, some information will be
meaningful only to those with detailed system knowledge.
The utility may be initiated with the mouse by using button 1 (left) to select “debug”, then selecting SOS from the pop-up. (NOTE:
sos may also be initiated by typing “sos” in response to a UNIX command prompt. When starting in this mode, be certain that the
window in which it is initiated is sufficiently large before starting the utility; the utility does not currently respond well to resizing the
window. The window should be at least 80x25 characters.)
Statistics are grouped into categories. A category is selected by typing the two character category mnemonic. Typing “he” (help) in
the window gives a list of categories, commands accepted by the utility, and meanings of special characters in the displays. (Note

spv-Multi-Computer Supervision Utility

5 spv-Multi-Computer Supervision Utility

The spv utility is useful for:
displaying computer states,
control of the configuration, and
alarming of computer state changes.
The utility has two operating modes
normal, and
superuser.
is subject to the

In normal mode, the user is able to obtain state information; in superuser mode, the user is able to both obtain state information and

name other than root, normal mode is default. When entering from root, superuser mode is default.

Division. Information is subject to the restrictions stated on the first page.

Information is received via softbus messages. Several instances of spv may be active simultaneously in the system, executing on

5.1 spv activate Command

The activate command immediately activates server states which have been prepared with the nominate command. Some software
objects must confirm the changeover; if confirmation is not received, the changeover will not succeed. This command should be
used advisedly; use show prepstates to verify the intended (future) configuration.

5.2 spv denominate Command

This is used to reverse effects of the nominate command. For example:
denominate name1
Reverses the effect on server name1, and:
denominate all
reverses the effect on all servers.
