IV. Explanation of the Prophecy
a. Dan 9:20-23 Years after the vision, the angel Gabriel came to Daniel to further explain the prophecy b. Dan 9:1-2 Daniel was praying about Jerusalem’s rebuilding. This is where Gabriel picks up (9:24, 25) c. Dan 9:24 The first 490 years deal with the judgment of Israel, at the end of which their probation is closed d. Dan 9:25 The start of the prophetic period is the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. That was issued in 457 BC: i. It took 49 years to rebuild Jerusalem ii. A total of 490 years would be probationary for Israel e. Acts 10:38 At the end of the “69 weeks” (483 of the 490 years), Jesus was anointed as the Messiah, at His baptism. That was the year AD 27 f. Dan 9:26, 27 The 70th is the last prophetic week: i. The “prince” is the Messiah, not Antiochus IV ii. In the middle of it, the Messiah was “cut off not for Himself:” He died for others’ sins iii. “He stopped sacrifice and offering” in the sanctuary by becoming the sacrifice Himself iv.
