Email: pwalstrom@unex.ucla.edu on Plumbing Systems I. Students gain a comprehensive coverage
of the design, calculation, and code requirements of advanced
plumbing systems, including water heaters, special waste and vent
systems, pumps and pumping systems, automatic fire sprinkler and
standpipe systems, gaseous agent suppression systems, and
specialized water treatment systems (such as water softening and
deionizing). Students learn the specialized piping materials required
for these systems. Prerequisite: Successful completion of X 400.8
Plumbing Systems I.
Plumbing Systems III: Systems Applications
Engineering X 400.10 • 4 units
This course applies the advanced plumbing systems covered in
Plumbing Systems II to different types of buildings. This course
discusses the varying and quite different design applications, system
approaches, and code requirements for buildings (including high-rise
offices), healthcare facilities, hotels, and sporting facilities (such as
arenas and stadiums). Students learn the contract document prepara-
tion process consisting of plans and specifications, as well as the
construction administration process consisting of shop drawings and
review of construction work in progress. Completing the entire
Plumbing Systems Design program prepares you to meet the design
challenges of the varying types of commercial and institutional
projects that are anticipated to be constructed in the next decade.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of X 400.9 Plumbing Systems II.

High Rise Building Plumbing Design

Engineering X 400.14 • 4 units
This course explores the subject of High Rise Building Plumbing
Design, including the components and systems typically found in such
buildings, but also some less traditional approaches. Topics studied
include: Sanitary Waste and Vent Stacks, Storm Water, Domestic
Cold Water Systems, Hot Water Systems, Hot Water Recirculation
Systems, Building Services/Utilities, Equipment, LEED and Sustainabil-
ity Considerations, Plumbing Fixtures, and others. Prequisite: Success-
ful completion of Plumbing Systems I, II, and III or consent of instructor

Fire Protection for Plumbing Engineers

Engineering X 400.16 • 4 units
Gain in-depth knowledge of the basic principles and Code require-
ments for preliminary design of fire sprinklers design, preparation of
performance specifications and review final shop drawings, calculations
and product submittals prepared by sprinkler Contractors. This course
benefits Engineers, Designers, and building officials and discusses
classification of occupancies, various types of fire sprinkler systems,
selection and size and location of fire risers and fire service. This course
teaches students how to prepare documents for competitive bidding
and review shop drawings, hydraulic calculations and product submit-
tals prepared by licensed Sprinkler Contractors. Prerequisite: Success-
ful completion of Plumbing Systems I, II, and III or consent of instructor

Hospital and Laboratory Plumbing Systems

Engineering X 400.17 • 4 units
Learn basic hospital and laboratory design from a plumbing design
standpoint. The course covers hospital medical gas systems, including
piping, equipment valves and alarms, as well as laboratory gas systems
including piping and storage systems. Instruction also provides an in-
troduction to Pure water systems followed by Laboratory Waste sys-
tems.
