LEAN PRODUCTION

- Parker Hannifin
One of the largest companies in the world in motion control technologies, Ohio-based Parker
Hannifin employs 58,000 people globally. Since 2000, the company has implemented best
practice programmes in productivity, quality, throughput, customer service and cost reduction.
Bosses found that E-business strategies dramatically reduced human intervention while
speeding up the supply chain process.

- Ford
Founder Henry Ford challenged ideas on waste in the 1910s. In his book My Life and Work, he
wrote of a farmer carrying water up a ladder rather than fitting water pipes as “waste motion”,
and showed that spending on improvements was not waste expense, but an increase in
efficiency and a reduction in waste.

SIX SIGMA

Samsung started out in 1938 as a small trading company in Su-dong near Daegu
city, founded by Lee Byung-chul. He had only forty employees to start with and the
company’s major business was the production of noodles and the distribution of groceries within
the city. From those humble beginnings Samsung has evolved into a brand of global leadership
in various industries including IT, shipbuilding and engineering, amongst others.

Samsung Electronics Co. (SEC) was the name given to the company in 1969 after
deciding to enter the electronics business. In 1970 they produced their first television set
and began exporting only two months later. Since that time, the company has used tools and
techniques such as total quality control, total process management, product data management,
enterprise resource management, supply chain management and customer relationship
management. Six Sigma was added to upgrade these innovations and improve SEC’s
competitive position in world markets.
GLOBALIZATION

The Apple is one of the biggest corporate giants in the world that could help the
globalization in the modernization. Apple’s iPhone led the world into the era of the smartphone
with apps that touch our lives in almost anyway you can imagine. Apple has an estimated net of
605 billion dollars and is often called the world’s most valuable company. The advantages of the
globalization in a company it could outsource the different companies that brings jobs and
technology to developing countries.

OUTSOURCING

The fact that IBM currently employs more workers in India than it does in the United States
underscores how interested the company is in creating a global workforce. China is also a
popular destination for this large company, as IBM outsources literally thousands of high paying
programming jobs to China in an attempt to lower costs for the company and consumers alike.

Many companies keep their outsourcing statistics confidential to a certain degree, so it is not
easy to state which companies do more overseas manufacturing than others. Even so, it is clear
that the above mentioned five companies are leading the way in terms of manufacturing a great
deal of their products in China and other countries. It is clear that manufacturing in China keeps
costs low for companies, enabling them to earn higher profits and sell goods at a cheaper price
than would have otherwise been possible.

ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS MANUFACTURING

The Nike is one of the environmentally conscious manufacturing that they do for the
environment than encourage people to walk; its headquarters in the Netherlands use recycled
aluminum frames and underground energy storage. The Nike also enforces strict emission
standards at all of its factory and has been able to reduce its overall carbon footprint by
approximately 80% since the late 90s. The advantages in using the environmentally conscious
manufacturing are it can help to save our environment and also it will help to improve the
business that can directly improve its public relations by implementing the green manufacturing.

- Philips Electronics
Not only does Philips strive to drastically increase its energy efficiency in its production process,
but it also invests billions of euros into green research, so that every company on earth can
someday be as eco-friendly as it is trying to be. That research has resulted in a tiny
LED, award-winning LEDs, the world’s “smartest” LED, the most efficient white LED, and much
more.

MICROFABRICATION

Angelique Johnson is the CEO of MEMStim, a company that is innovating how electrode
arrays in cochlear implants are manufactured. Using automated micro-fabrication, instead of
costly hand-made manufacturing, the CEO of the company is able to lower the cost of
production, allowing more people in need of implants to afford them. In using the
microfabrication as the manufacturing trend in a company it can provide faster, more accurate
and more reliable operation than similar products of larger size and it can applied the
technology in virtually unlimited, many manufacturing operations can experience the various
size, performance and cost advantages.

NANOTECHNOLOGY

Advanced Electron Beams

Advanced Electron Beams (AEB) enables the green factory of the future by making sustainable
manufacturing possible and profitable. AEB's compact electron beam emitters replace thermal
and chemical processes for cleaner, more efficient, lower-cost manufacturing. For industries
such as pharmaceutical, medical devices, food and beverage, printing, and plastics, AEB
emitters sterilize products and packaging, improve the performance of plastics and other
materials, cure inks and coatings and eliminate pollution.
