When I walk through the city, I see all
kinds of different people.

People with sophisticated clothes but


strange haircuts, people with dark
clothes and colourful hair, people who
look easy-going, people who look
arrogant.

These people could be part of an


urban tribe.

How do urban tribes start?

■ When a group of people who like the same kind of music, the same clothing
style, have the same habits and go to the same places, their group might be
given a name.

These groups are known as urban tribes and there are many of them.

Urban tribes

goths Goths wear dark clothes and listen to heavy metal.

Emos also wear dark clothes and listen to emotional


emos music.

skaters Skaters love skating and wear T-shirts and sneakers.

Most hippies lived during the 1960s and 1970s, but


hippies there are still some left.

hipsters Many people are not sure if hipsters are cool or not.

Punks like to fight authority and listen to loud,


punks aggressive music.

geeks Geeks love what they do.

Originally from Japan, the trend of being cute is called


kawaii kawaii.

Goths sometimes wear black clothes


and paint their faces white.

He is a bit of an emo. He is very


emotional.

Sometimes, people think too much about their own emotions and forget
selfish about others. This can seem selfish.

Hippies sometimes change their plans and drive a long way in a van
easy-going together to a music festival. They are so easy-going.

bossy You’re not allowed to be bossy just because you’re older than me!

Hipsters always look relaxed. They are often drinking coffee, reading, or
relaxed getting their hair cut.

Geeks are very confident when talking about their favourite topic but when
nervous they talk about other topics they can be a bit nervous.

Young skaters sometimes skate on the footpath through the city. That isn’t a
naughty crime but it’s a bit naughty.
