SYNCROLIFT® O & M MANUAL
PROPRIETARY – NOT FOR DISCLOSURE
REVISION HISTORY
8-1. INTRODUCTION
The control system consists of two Motor Control Centers (MCC’s), the Operator’s
WorkStation (OWS), the limit switches and junction boxes on the hoists and a Hand
Held Controller (HHC).
Each of the MCC’s contains the circuit breakers, starters, protection equipment, relays,
transformers and the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC).
The OWS consists of the PC, custom built keyboard, color monitor and printer.
The controls are designed to operate the Syncrolift® Shiplift with a minimum of settings.
The keyboard provides complete control of the Syncrolift® Shiplift by one person.
Emergency controls are provided and mounted in MCC A so that docking or undocking
can be completed if the OWS is temporarily non-operational. The OWS must be
repaired or replaced once the docking or undocking is completed. The emergency
controls are not designed for prolonged use as they lack many of the control modes, the
displays and the alarms that are provided on the OWS.
The Syncrolift® Shiplift must always be controlled by a trained Operator, and the
procedures in the following sections must be followed.
Before the platform is lowered to dock a vessel the platform must be leveled.
Before a vessel is transferred from the platform to the shore or from the shore to the
platform, the platform must be leveled.
Assuming the platform is at the Normal Limit Up (NLU) elevation, the platform is
lowered approximately 75mm in the AUTO DOWN mode, stopped, then raised in the
AUTO UP mode and leveled by pressing the LEVEL function key when the PLATFORM
LEVEL READY indication is displayed.
A system of radio communications between the Operator and the dock personnel is
useful.
CAUTION
The Operator who performs all switching at the MCC’s and operation of the
shiplift from the OWS.
The Dockmaster who is in charge of the line handling, placing of the bilge blocks
and giving orders to the Operator.
A detailed description of the features of the control system together with fault finding
procedures is provided in Section 6 of this manual.
NOTE In the event of an emergency while the Syncrolift® Shiplift is running, the
Operator must press the EMERGENCY STOP pushbutton.
When the control system is powered up the Syncrolift® Shiplift START UP screen will be
displayed on the monitor. This screen contains the following information:
4. The address, the telephone number, the E-mail address and the fax number of
Rolls-Royce Marine North America (RRMNA) in Annapolis, U.S.A.
If the Operators need to contact RRMNA for assistance, they should quote the
information shown on this screen.
At any time during the following operating procedures, any one of the three standard
screen display options (SYNCROLIFT STATUS, SYNCROLIFT HOIST LOAD and
SYNCROLIFT MOTOR CURRENT) for the display monitor can be selected by pushing
the corresponding function key.
NOTE A control mode can only be selected, and the Syncrolift® Shiplift started,
when the Operator is viewing the SYNCROLIFT STATUS, the
SYNCROLIFT HOIST LOAD or the SYNCROLIFT MOTOR CURRENT
screens.
The Syncrolift® Shiplift can be stopped when any screen is being viewed.
The alarm is to alert the Operator to a potential fault condition. If an alarm condition
exists, the Operator should advise the maintenance personnel to find and correct the
problem at the earliest opportunity.
The Operator must not ignore an alarm condition just because the controls are still
operational.
A trip condition in the control system is indicated by a RED block, or a message with a
RED background. A FAULT ALARM message will also be displayed on each screen.
The problem must be traced and corrected immediately.
8-3.1. Initialization
a. In each MCC, press and hold the UPS unit power button until
the UPS is on load.
c. The computer at the OWS will power up. Turn the monitor on, if
necessary.
The computer monitor will first display the system start-up messages, and
then the Syncrolift® Shiplift START UP screen.
NOTE The message SELECT NORMAL TO CLOSE MCB will be displayed if the
Operator attempts to close the Main Circuit Breaker (MCB) when TEST
mode is active. The MCB can only be closed in the NORMAL mode.
NOTE An MCB NOT CLOSED prompt will be displayed if the Operator attempts
to select a control mode and the MCB has not been closed.
Press the FAULT RESET function key to clear any previous fault
indications.
8-3.2. Auto(matic) Up

start the sequence when leveling is required using the following
procedure:
2. Press the AUTO DOWN function key (the pawls will be retracted
automatically).
3. Check that all the individual PAWLS RETRACTED indicators and the
ALL PAWLS RETRACTED indicators are displayed GREEN.
The START function key must not be pressed until all of the pawls are
retracted.
NOTE If the START pushbutton is pressed before all the pawls have retracted,
the controls interlock will prevent shiplift operation, and an ALL PAWLS
DID NOT RETRACT message will be displayed.
Check that the ship load display is set to zero when the tare has been
set.
6. The Operator Stop Depth can be set at this stage. Follow the
instructions in Section 8-3.8 to set the required depth stop limit.
NOTE If the tare was not set in Step 5, the TARE IS NOT SET message will be
displayed for 30 seconds and then cancelled.
8-3.4. Transfer Up
NOTE: The controls are programmed to stop the platform if it reaches the FLU
elevation while using this mode.
NOTE: The TRANSFER UP control mode can only be used when the platform is
at, or near, the transfer elevation when the PLATFORM LEVEL READY
or the PLATFORM LEVEL indication is displayed.
NOTE: Each start in the TRANSFER UP control mode will be started from the
land end hoists first.
CAUTION
NOTE: The controls are programmed to prevent a thermal trip from occurring. If
the Operator attempts to jog more than five times within a 60 second
period, the controls will not allow the shiplift to start a sixth time and a
WAIT TO JOG message will be displayed on the STATUS screen.
Release the JOG function key and allow the thermal elements to cool
down (approximately 60 seconds) and the message will be cleared.
The START signal will be energized for five seconds, the programmed
time, in the controls. Motor running is indicated by the MOTOR
RUNNING indicators turning GREEN and the CONTROL STATUS
window indicating PLATFORM RAISING.
The JOG function key can be released at any time within the 14
seconds programmed time to stop the hoists, if required.
4. The hoists will run until the programmed time limit (14 seconds) runs
out, or the JOG function key is released, unless a Final Limit Up (FLU)
operates. If any FLU switch operates, the MCB will be tripped and all
the hoists will stop.
NOTE: The TRANSFER DOWN mode can only be used when the PLATFORM
LEVEL READY or the PLATFORM LEVEL indicators are displayed,
indicating that the platform is at, or near, the transfer elevation.
NOTE: Each start in the TRANSFER DOWN control mode will be started from the
land end hoists first.
3. Check that all PAWLS RETRACTED indicators and the ALL PAWLS
RETRACTED indicators are displayed GREEN.
CAUTION
NOTE The controls are programmed to prevent a thermal trip from happening. If
the Operator attempts to jog more that five times within a 60 second
period, the controls will not allow the shiplift to start a sixth time and a

docking.
The SET DEPTH LIMIT key on the OWS keyboard is used to enter a desired
depth to automatically stop the platform when lowering it. The stop depth is
measured from the NLU elevation.
The depth setting may only be input when the platform is stopped and the
SYNCROLIFT STATUS screen is being viewed.
If an Operator Stop Depth has not been entered by the Operator, the display
on the SYNCROLIFT STATUS screen will show the maximum allowable
depth stop.
1. If the platform is level at the NLU elevation, i.e. all NLU limit switches
are open, the AUTO DOWN control mode must be selected before the
SET DEPTH LIMIT function key can be pressed. The key is
operational at all times if the platform is below the transfer elevation
and the platform is stopped.
NOTE If all of the NLU switches are operated, and the controls are not in the
AUTO DOWN mode, the set depth stop and the display will be reset to its
maximum depth.
A numeric entry keypad will be displayed at the top of the screen, only
values between 0.1 and the maximum allowable depth will be
accepted.
3. Enter the required depth setting using the number keys and the
decimal point key. The value input will be displayed on the depth
setting limit window.
