was Amazon’s Echo speaker

Hampshire, UK last year. Lest
we forget, the intelligent Apple
Watch recordings in the high-

der case. A news report claims
that Khashoggi used an Apple
Watch to record audio of his
alleged killing by Saudis inside
their consulate in Istanbul. It

murder of an Arabic woman.
The case had remained open
and unsolved due to lack of evi-
dence. However, the new DNA

ment to process samples and
evidence to solve crimes. These
include evidence analysis, fin-
gerprints, DNA identification,
drug and chemical analysis,

their phones. The stolen phone proved to
be of great help. The victim received noti-
fication from the cloud regarding new
pictures. The accused took pictures of
various places with the victim’s mobile.
Since her mailbox was synced to the
cloud, she could access the pictures. She
notified us and we recovered the pictures
of the accused. Around 100 photographs
of different men who used the phone at
railway stations, bus stand, and other
places were obtained. The rape survivor
identified the accused from the pho-
tographs,” explains Mukesh.

gait analysis are gaining ground.
Forensic gait analysis is based on the
premise that every individual’s walk-
ing pattern is unique. The gait analysis
technology helped the police to crack

Forensic tools, like DNA tests, have been
around for years. The Mumbai police

cedure followed in the Sheena Bora case).
Then there is forensic facial reconstruc-
tion used in the forensic field when a
crime involves unidentified remains. The
process recreates the face of an individ-
ual from their skeletal remains through a
combination of artistry, anthropology,
osteology and anatomy. There are three
main types of facial reconstruction: two-
dimensional (photographic prints or
drawing), three-dimensional (sculpture
or high-res 3D computer image) and
superimposition.

H
aving made Mumbai’s streets his can-
vas and DSLR camera his paintbrush,
photographer Star Udyawar’s narra-
tion of everyday life in the maximum
city is riveting. As can be seen in his
various portrayals of the city like the historic
Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), Dhobi Ghat
with its colourful backdrop, and the famous Sea-
link. For Udyawar, perspective is key as it
defines the in-depth relationship between
the objects in a picture along with the
dimensions that a viewer perceives.
“I attended a photography workshop
two years back and the person there
said, ‘If as a photographer you click a
frame and a month later click that
exact frame again, then you have not
grown as a photographer’ and I have
engraved these lines onto my heart,”
reveals the 34-year-old photographer who
eats and sleeps on the streets of Mumbai when
not running his business.
“With the CST frame, I didn’t merely want the
CST reflection but the man to come in the frame
too,” he explains.
For the self-taught photographer, who started as
a wedding photographer till he found his true
calling, a frame is incomplete without a subject.

“When I started clicking the city, I used to click
empty frames. But over time, I realised that an

see what comes out of it. The problem
is that we simply run off to a different
location, giving up too easily. Recently, I
took one picture of a bus passing under the
bridge in Nana Chowk. I waited for two hours for
a non-advertised bus to pass under the bridge,”
explains the photographer.
Determined to capture everyday Mumbai life in
extraordinary frames, Udyawar aspires to chase
more sunsets and sunrises. “I hate doing por-
traits. I like landscapes and have numerous pic-
tures of sunrise and sunset. And 2020 resolution
is to chase more and more sunrise and sunset,” he

A
t the crack of dawn,
the seaside town of
Nha Trang, in the
eastern coast of
Vietnam, is already
bustling. A group of women,
assembled on the beach, perform
synchronised workouts to
upbeat tunes while elderly
onlookers, seated nearby, watch
the proceedings with interest.
This morning ritual is a noisy
affair and faint strains drift up
to the veranda of our sea-facing
suite.
As the sun begins to rise high-
er, fishing boats bobbing on the
rocky sea are back with the day’s
catch and morning walkers, who
appear like moving dots in a
matrix from our elevated sea-fac-
ing suite, make themselves
scarce as tourists begin splaying
out at various spots on the beach
to soak up the sun.
This high-energy beach resort
town enjoys a stunning setting:
Surrounded by verdant moun-
tain ranges that hug a turquoise
bay dotted with tropical islands.
Also known as the Riviera of the
South China Sea, Nha Trang
offers a six-kilometre stretch of
beautiful coastline with white
sandy beaches, clear waters with
an abundance of marine life.
Our first stop is the Hon Chong
promontory that has a panoram-
ic view of the mountainous
coastline and nearby islands.
After a short ride, we find our-
selves descending a flight of
stairs to reach the cape. We pass
the ‘Heaven’s Gate’ — a rock that
hangs precariously between two
larger stones, and walk towards
the towering Hon Chong at the
far end of the promontory. The
eponymous stone, a massive for-
mation that leaves us spellbound
has a local legend attached to it.
Apparently, an inebriated giant
was pushed off the cliff by
fairies who would bathe in the
waters near Hon Chong. To
memorialise this story, there’s a
massive gouge in the rock that
resembles a handprint. We take a
breather at the adjoining Bai
Duong Beach—less popular and
populated than the main beach
— with clear waters gushing
over powder white sands.
Post the sightseeing, we decide
to explore the city’s cultural his-
tory and book a local taxi — 20

century, the temple complex has
been used as a place of worship
for Cham, Chinese and
Vietnamese Buddhists and also
has Hindu influences. One of the
towers, for instance, has a linga
inside the main chamber, while
another houses an idol of Lord
Shiva with his consort. Being
much higher than sea level, this
peaceful spot looks down onto
the busy beach town of Nha
Trang and the fishing trawlers
crowding Cai River estuary.
Local legend has it that the
river’s Xom Bong Bridge sur-
vived WWII bombings due to the
temple’s spiritual protection.
Our taxi next stops at Long Son
Pagoda which houses an awe-
inspiring 24-metre-tall statue of
Buddha seated on a lotus throne.
The 150-steps hike and the blis-
tering heat has us beat and we
retreat to our hotel bar for some
R&R.
As the sun disappears from
the horizon, we decide to
explore the city’s landmark
sights on foot. The closest
attraction from our hotel is the

helps us identify the street
intersection that our hotel is
on. Our leisurely walk sparkles
up an appetite. Luckily, just a
few 100 metres away, on Nha
Trang beach, we find enterpris-
ing fisher women busily attend-
ing to their stoves, grilling
everything from clams to lob-
sters—right on the footpath. We
sample a plate of juicy lobster,
chopped into bite-sized portions
and transferred to a thermocol
container with a lid. Slow roast-
ed on grill over a mild flame, the
minimalist preparation is com-
pleted with a squeeze of lemon
as a final garnish. But while the
shell has been cracked open
from a side, one requires to
scoop out the meat using dispos-
able cutlery provided by our
vendor. Needless to say, this
wasn’t the most convenient
meal of the day. But once we
manage to excavate the succu-
lent chunks of meat glued to the
cavernous flaming orange shell,
life doesn’t seem so bad after all.

METHOD:
 Take fresh curry leaves and deep fry, cool it,
crush it and make powder.
 Nicely clean half of the chicken and marinate
with orange, salt, pepper, fresh curry leaves
powder. Keep aside for 30 minutes.
 Add a tablespoon of oil and heat, add garlic,
onion, asparagus, artichoke and bell pepper
and sauté for 30 seconds. Keep aside.
 Prepare a grill on medium-high heat or heat
grill pan over medium heat and grill, and cook
seasoned and marinated chicken, turning it
occasionally until cooked.
 For curry cream orange sauce: Take a small
pan and add some chopped garlic, and cook for
10 seconds. Add fresh cream, fresh orange
juice, fresh curry leaf powder with salt with
pepper and cook for another minute. The
sauce is ready.
 Arrange all elements on a platter with grilled
chicken and orange rings and serve hot with
boiled red rice.

WARM COUSCOUS AND ARUGULA SALAD WITH ORANGE DRESSING

INGREDIENTS METHOD
 Olive oil: 3 tbsp  Heat a saucepan over medium heat.
 Sliced onion: 1/2  Add olive oil and sauté the onion and gar-
